Arabesque: Arts of the Arab World February 23-March 15, 2009
11:17:47 AM Sunday Jan 25, 2009

Unwrap the cultural treasures of the Arab world in this Kennedy Center international festival showcasing the varied cultures of the 22 Arab nations that represent the Arabic-speaking world. From the Arabian Gulf to the Levant to North Africa-this region of the world is the birthplace of human civilization and features extraordinary diversity in geography, traditions, landscape, religion, and contemporary aesthetics. In cooperation with the League of Arab States, the three-week festival brings together artists, many of whom are making their U.S. debut, in performances of music, dance, and theater, as well as exhibitions featuring art installations, fashion, a soundscape, cuisine, a marketplace, and much more. Discover the evolution of art forms born from the cradle of human civilization. Experience an amazing breadth of culture that spans both eons and continents.

Oh wow, I just checked the music program for the Arabesque festival, and it is magnificent! I recognized these names from North Africa, and I'm grateful the festival invited them:

- Bnet Houariyat: Voices of Marrakech. These women have an amazing sense of rhythm and melodies typical of rural pop Morocco and of spiritual flavor. I first listened to Bnet Houariyat on a remixed album produced by Cheb Sabah, a successful Algerian jewish artist based in San Francisco.

- Bachir Attar & the Master Musicians of Jajouka. These guys hail from Northern Morocco and produce surreal music through multiple flutes zemmar and complicated drum patterns. Bachir was first discovered and immediately exposed to the world by the American writer Paul Bowles in Morocco.

- Chabab Al Andalous Rabat Orchestra with Bajeddoub Mohammed and Ronda Bahae. I don't think an Arab festival is complete without Moroccan Andaloussi music.

- Hoba Hoba Spirit: Hayha Music. And who doesn't know Hoba Hoba ???

- Djamel Laroussi. I discovered this Algerian drum artist in myspace three years ago. I believe he lives in Sweden but I'm not sure.

Almost there Driss, try to do this:
1. open bracket [
2. immediately follow by the FULL url including the http:// part
3. leave space
4. now type the words you want to link. For example: Arabesque: Arts of the Arab World February 23-March 15, 2009 at the Kennedy Center in Boston MA
5. close the bracket ]

ps: Driss, for links, you have to add words you want to link immediately after the URL address. Seperate the URL and the word(s) by a space. And remove the space you have after the first bracket.
