Have you met someone recently who still says "7ashakoum" everytime he says the words Kelb (dog), 7mar (donkey), zbel (garbage), and in some extreme cases yhoudi (jew)? People who use 7ashakoum roughly means "except you", and intend to exclude the person they are talking to from a quality or group they consider bad, improper or detestable. So anyways, this standup comedian from West Algeria, Abdelkader Sektour, one of my favourites these days, sheds some brilliant light on this idiom. Besides his great performance like always, you can clearly see how close his language and accent is to Eastern Morocco's (Oujda, Berkane etc). West Algeria and East Morocco must have been one whole part of the same country at some point. This is an interesting historical tangent, but I just wanted to share this comedian with you as he shakes up the culture surrounding the idiom "7ashakoum". Enjoy!
