Moroccan Small Businesses Abroad
12:00:00 AM Thursday Jun 19, 2003

Are you an owner of a small Moroccan business in USA, Canada, France..etc ? What's your business ? What is the process to follow in Morocco and in the foreign country ? Where to get information about this ? any shortcuts? May be you may give the community advice based on your experience?

This discussion hopefully may enlighten the Moroccan community about the tacit knowledge of starting that small business whether it's a fast food place, restaurant, supermarket, artisanat, etc..

Good Day Dearest One,
I have the feeling that this piece of mail will reach you in a perfect state of mind and in a better healthy codition. While searching,i came accross your contact address and decided to contact you,as i wish to present this proposal for the purpose of investment in your country. My name is Miss Linda Tamah,I am 20 years old. I am the daughter of Late Hon Dr Fibian Tamah the former Minister of Transport and Communication under the leadership of president Charles Taylor of Liberia.

My father was arrested on 1st of Nov 2001 by Charles Taylor on allegation of using his position in the Govenment to aid smuggling of diamond from the Lofia county diamond field,it was just a political vendetta. My father later died in the prison,it was diagnonised that he was poisoned, but Government report says heart failure.
He sent a note to me before his death, regarding a deposit of the sum of Eight Million Two Hundred Thousand United States Dollars he deposited for me. He instructed us to move immediately with the documents to a neighbouring country to seek asylum. We moved to the Republic of Mali where we spent some time before finally moving to Dakar with the help of United Nation Agency.

Meanwhile i have located the bank, and have also discussed the possible transfer of the fund.my father left a clause that i must reach the age of 24 before i could manage the fund myself that i have to introduce a trusted foreign partner who would be my trustee to help me invest this fund hence the need for your assistance. I request that you be my trustee and assist me in effecting the transfer of the fund to your account or an account you will nominate for investment.

You will also be resposible for the investment and management of the fund for me and also you will help me get a good school where i will further my education.we will agree on a percentage you will take for your assistance. Please let me know immediately if you can assist me so that I will give you more information about the deposit. I thank you in anticipation to your quick response,I will like you to reply through this my private Email address(msslinda11@yahoo.com)
Yours sincerely
Miss Linda Tamah.

I was referred to this terrific site that is webmastered by a Moroccan engineer . The sites provides the International Callback service that allows callers anywhere in the world to initiate their calls from withing the United States, benefiting therefore from the low International rates available in Sam land. It is very useful for Families in Morocco to call their immigrant sons and kins in USA and Canada at low cost . I used to use calling cards but there's a additional rate that is deducted locally which makes Callback cheaper.
Check it at :

Talking about businesses,I have a joke for you guys.
A husband was sitting watching a football game, and his wife came along asking him if he could fix the door knob. He replied to her "Do I have a carpenter stumped on my forehead?"
After awhile she turned around asking him if he could unclog the kitchen sink for her,His answer was"Do I have a plumber stumped on my forehead?!!"
The third time she asked something about electricity, and she got the same negative answer.
The game had finished;the husband went out to a bar to have a drink. And then he came back to his wife and found everything fixed. when he asked about her deal. she told him about that gentleman whom she had asked to fix her things, and how he wanted to be reciprocated either by a nice cake or by going to bed with her.
The husband cool reaction was"So how was the cake honey?"
Her answer was "Do I have Bakery stumped on my forehead !!!"

One more thing In the United States there??s a government agency that assists counsels, and protects the interests of small businesses in the USA. Its www.sba.gov I think this is a good link 4 anyone the is planning to open a business they offer many things for free and some courses 4 a small fee. I think it??s worth the small fee heyt it can save u from shutting down or failure in the future. There is also SCORE (service Corps of Retired Executives) it??s a group of Ex-Businessmen who volunteer there time 2 small business through SBA. They basically come in into Ur Resturant, company or what ever you own and they observe and see how u do things and they give u advice and stuff.

I think this is enough for now But as I said earlier if you want any more info or anything just email me at wedadeya@hotmail.com yalla take care wa good luck 2 everyone. ??

I would have to say that capital, Good management and a very good business plan are the Key ingredients in a successful business and at the same time they can be the reason for failure. Most Businesses assume that they will get quick money but the fact is in some cases it may take up to a year or even more. U doesn?t need only money to open Ur business but to operate it. If u go and see why some restaurants or small companies fail all see that a reason is lack of good management. A good leader with a clear idea and he/she shouldn?t only be a manager but a leader, and should be ready to deal with all types of problems they come up. Wa Employees play the biggest role cuz if u walk into a restaurant wa the waiter takes ur order with an attitude, doesn?t smile, Chances are that u wont come back,.

One thing that u should put a lot of time into when u decide to Run a business is Your Business Plan. Never Never Never take it for granted and write anything, cuz what it is 4 those who don?t know: A carefully constructed guide 4 the person starting a business, & is the document that most investors look at to see if they want to grant you your loan, or invest in ur company. If u want more details about it and the outline feel free to email me at wedadeya@hotmail.com

I have a good Idea for raioo members and administrators ... let's open up a restaurent ..and call it RAIOO ...It would be awesome ..
well here on the east cost there are lots of moroccan restaurents ..but the better ones are the ones that runned by non moroccans ..I have no idea why ?
for example there is a moroccan restaurant, night club style ..It's really nice with sha3bi and the dancers ..and It's always packed ..I was amazed when I saw how americans like our music except that they dance as if they are in a club downtown OR like the sean paul style , shake that thing lol Peace all

Salam,
Well, I totally agree with -mardil-Asuccessful businees needs a well organized strategy that not only should provide ways to run it adequately in the short run but how to make improvements to enlarge its scope and survive the fierce competition in the market place.Food business, honestly; which most of us are familiar with, requires more attention and mostly a skillful fusion or combination between the product being offerd and the way it is brought to customers, it is mainly about proving a service more than sheer food to satisfy hunger.Hunger is our very instinctive activity as humans, we can obstain from buying a car, cloths...but not eating food.We need it,otherwise we die.Hopefully, everybody offers it, however, survives only who offers it well. Devotion is what I am going to offer as an advice. Devote yourself to your work and you will succeed for sure. And allah supports my claim, Soub7anahou 9al" Ra7ima allaho 3abdan 3amila 3amaln fa at9anah" Sadaka allahou al3athim.
Thanks....

mradil, interesting account you made. I think it's very important you mentioned the atmosphere of the place of a business. The design is extremely important, and a good design will take care of good lighting whether by day or by night. I am personnaly very keen about design. Most Moroccan food places I've been to in the Boston area lacked thoughtful design, and interestingly, lacked quality in food.. the service? unfortunately it was poor also.

If anyone plans to open a Moroccan fast food place in Boston area, I recommend you observe a very popular Mexican place called Anna's Taquerilla (Burritos). they have a place in Brookline and Allston. Try to see what's behind their success ? Myself, I see thoughtful design, cheerful servers, you get your food in no more than 20 seconds, and it's closest you can get to authentic Mexican. Oh, and they have authentic Mexican drinks called jarritos, very delicious!

People go there to get two things I believe: authentic food and soft drinks, and the fast service experience! As a result, almost always there's long lines of customers!

always stick to your values and morals and know that honesty and good will help a man in many ways. know that the secret to your success is ultimately satisfied customers, never let anyone leave regretting having come there, because mad customers talk and bad publicity is the worst that could happen to you. take advertising seriously because it works advertise you strengths well. know how to define your competition and target market and always remember you depend on the customer not them on you. there is a lot more to tell and i'm tired of typing so email me if you feel like discussing. adiliraqi@yahoo.com

There was little light, some of the chairs were wiggling, there was nobody at the counter so my friends didn't know if they should order at the counter or somebody will wait on them, i had to go wake up on of the owners who was sleeping in the back!!! the problem with that place was lack of planning, the owners didn't plan on how much light is needed during the day or night, what chairs and tables would be appropriate for the atmosphere, i don?ft think they ever thought about the atmosphere, they didn't emphasize the value of customer care. later it turns out that the fliers they were distributing were distributed only to trash cans by some of their friends supposedly helping them. they ended up bankrupt never talking to each other again. the lesson i learned from them was simple and very valuable, in order to have a successful business(restoration at least) in America one must be on top of things at all time, controlling every aspect of everything involved with the business and planning ahead will save your a$$. choose partners well, get people you know or your friends to criticize you business because if you think that everything is ok you will never improve. and being professional will assure that you covered all points to be covered. Expect problems to come in the first 6 months or so, you must be prepared to deal with them, financially and mentally.

a fine!
the advise Mr. rhoula gave is very important if you understand the dept of it. "To be very careful and to think about everything before they start their own business". Success or failure of a business may depend on one miserable issue that wasn't noticed or taken care of. i used to work in a coffee house in Baltimore, MD it was called Casablanca cafe. it had an ambitious owner full of ideas and resources, it was in a good location off of a major road in front of a shopping center. prices were reasonable and the food was good. but even with the advertising the owner was doing the place was almost always empty. at that time i was doing my sophomore year of international business and i spent all my summer in that joint. i didn?ft care about anything as long as i get paid but i had to leave because i couldn?ft stand the owner fighting with his newly acquired partner (the partner was meant to help share the responsibilities and expenses). a few months later i came back with a couple of my friends and for the first time i saw that place with customers eyes.

I own a pizza restaurant here in Oklahoma City. We also do Moroccan food. I would advice all the Moroccan friends that want to start their own business here in the US to be very careful and to think about everything before they start their own business. Actually it?s not hard at all to start a new business in the US. What is hard is the first few months you must have a back up fund to help survive the first 5 or 6 first months while you are looking for customers and trying to get things taking care of. Also it would be great if you can have a business partner or two. The reason why I said that is because you can all share the responsibilities and in case one would like to take a vacation there would be someone else to run the business. The Food business is a very hard and complicated business. It seems that it's hard to manage but I believe it way more difficult to run a restaurant than to run a convenience store. First you need to have more employees in restaurants more overhead more labor more headaches...
There is so much to say about this subject so if anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me.
My e-mail address is: rhoula@yahoo.com
May Allah bless your heart.
