I remember not too long ago, a new association surfaced in Greater Boston with a mission to serve the Moroccan community. It was baptized MACCA for Moroccan American Civic and Cultural Association. It was the second child in the community. The bigger sister is called Al Huda, an association based first and foremost on the Muslim identity of the Moroccan community. Al Huda facilitates the Muslim-related programs such as Sunday school, Friday prayers, Islam awareness, Ramadan prayers as well as raising money to own their own property/mosque/school. Al Huda, according to a video I randomly found in youtube was founded by individuals who were affiliated or perhaps inspired by Morocco's Islamic movement Al Adl Wa I7ssan. Not that there is something wrong with it, on the contrary it's wonderful to make communal efforts to nurture the Muslim identity of Moroccans in this country. But MACCA seemed like a good complementing alternative. Less focused on religion, and more on civic and culture. It was a promising baby with big potential in the years to come as it learsn to talk and walk. I understood that MACCA sought to figure out ways to help the Moroccan community build bridges between their Moroccan identity and the newly embraced American identity. I thought it was great. And just when I was getting acclimated to the mission of MACCA, they suddenly pulled the rug from underneath, and all it took was for them to mysteriousely drop the Moroccan in MACCA for Muslim. So now we have Muslim American Civic and Cultural Association. What happened? did MACCA merge with Al Huda? I guess not because Al Huda is still there.
The new name sounds like a big sound byte. It sure gives the impression that this is a national umbrella that stands alongside big sisters like ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) and MAS (Muslim American Society). The only Muslim events I am exposed to by the new MACCA are interfaith dialogues with members of the christian and jewish faiths.
I never understood what exactly triggered this change. I expected MACCA to be transparent about it just so we understand its evolution, nothing more. In fact, while they were changing the name it would have made more sense to give it a more focused and relevant name by sticking at least Boston somewhere, since they had to wipe out the magic word that glues Moroccans together. And only God knows how much we need the glue.
If anyone in Boston, or elsewhere, understands, let me know :)
