Buy From Your Local Farmers Market !
05:19:18 PM Thursday Jun 12, 2008

I received the message underneath from my brother. It reminded me of weekly produce markets in Morocco. They're fresh, authentic, healthy and delicious!
In Oujda, I used to go once in a while with my mom every Friday to the most popular farmers' market in town: Souk Sidi7ya (Sidi Yahya). My mom would browse several farmers' produce, checking the quality, color, smell, look and price, before she starts harrassing. Huggling is her forte. When she makes her first move, a yellow-turbanned man would usually come in offering his services to carry the produce. She would hire him. And throughout the hour or so he would accompany us. I would carry the fragile stuff (strawberries, apricots, figs). He would haul the heavy-duty onions, potatoes, carrots, parsnip, "Laftt", "Qorni3". Sometimes he contracts another guy to help him out. I used to feel good because it's money well spent and they deserve every penny of it. There was also Souk Thlat (Tuesday Market), and Souk El7add (Sunday Market). Souk El7add was both a produce and a flee market where you could find anything from vintage bicycles to the smallest knobs and washers to household appliances, to tires, remedies...

For those of you interested in locally grown produce, here is a link to several farmers markets in Massachusetts; might be a small contribution to helping with the energy crisis.

Siham ~ I really enjoyed your comment. Thank you for your nice interaction. I am glad we shared reading this same book "the Kite Runner" and I feel honored to have contributed in encouraging you to read it. This book was about TWO MEN, himself and his half brother, who from children to grown ups, went through severe experiences of a tumultuous nation in war over three decades.

The new book, Mr. Hosseini wrote about four years later: "A Thousand Splendid Suns", seems to be an incredible chronicle of his nation's history in war time and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love. It is a story of TWO WOMEN this time, Mariam and Laila, who were brought jarringly together by loss and by fate. I haven't read it yet, but I certainly will when I get it. From the comments I read and heard about it, it seems that it is a good one as well.

Baba Salem,
I just read Kite runner a few weeks ago. It was beautiful. I actually bought it after I read your comment about it in an earlier blog. I had heard someone recommend it before but never bothered looking into it untill I walked by it in Barnes and Noble. I got so hooked into it that I bought another copy from a church sale while I was vacationing in Cape Cod. Thanks for bringing it up. I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. I don't know if it's as good. did you read it?

Beautiful vivid images retrieved with nostalgia from the memories of the children we once were! Thanks for sharing.

Hudhud ~ the second paragraph of your comment could be the beginning of the expected novel to be started sometime in the near future. It has all the linguistic and poetic ingredients. The exotic words/nouns impact on the non Arab reader have the same striking magic as those used by Khaled Housseini in his bestsellers. What do you think ?

By the way, I must confess that I like the way Siham writes as well...

the way my dad shops is more like how Amine's mom shops.. and how my mom shops sounds more like your dad's style of shopping Siham. too funny.. I guess we just can never stereotype these "gender" roles after all!

I'll never forget the first time I set foot in a real souq back home. I was 9. Khali Sofiane took me with him and my cousin Karim to souq Lakhmiss. As soon as we stepped out of the old dusty white Citroen, a gang of boys younger than me marched past all carrying live chickens and roosters upside down by their claws, the poor things squawking and making a horrible feathery mess. It freaked the hell out of me =D

Adnane: it's marche couvert. They completely screw it up now with the construction of the ugliest building in town.

Souhaima: "I'm surprised that back then, your mother went to the souk and in Oujda (known to be extremely conservative)". It was rare to find men shopping in the souks in Oujda. Men generally preferred spending time sipping their coffee at the local cafes (of which there is a billion)

I loved fish especially sardines in the summer. Fish day for us was simply the day the fish merchant swore the fish just came from the port. The merchants knew better than to lie to El Hajj Hamid because they wouldn’t get away with it and the marche was so small a merchant’s reputation was vital. In the summer, my mother didn’t bother scaling the sardines or marinating them so she was in a good mood. She would make a cucumber and tomatoe salad and setup a table outside in the front yard and cushions on the floor. My dad would light the charcoal and let me fan it till my mom brought the sardines that she salted generously in a big container. We would sit outside and eat directly on the plastic table. No utensils. No rules. Making a mess was expected so everyone sat around eating as fast as they could while I counted the skeletons and tried to beat whoever ate the most, though sometimes I would get distracted staring at the little creature’s eyes and playing with its mouth and fins. It was like having a picnic at home.
I try to make sardines at home now but they never taste the same as my mom’s. I don’t know if it’s the quality of the Portuguese three month frozen sardines, or the missing charcoal or just the atmosphere.

That was really funny! thanks for sharing. Shopping with father is different than with mother I guess then. My dad would take care of the meat and fruit treats. He was very rapid in his shopping too, just like your dad. He would usually shop in the daily market close to his workplace (in Oujda it used to be a colonial French building with a beautiful architecture called Marche Couvert (or was it Ouvert? I can't remember..). He would then call home and the first one that answers is tasked with pickup. At lunch time, at some point, a conversation about the quality and price of fruits and vegetables bought earlier is a must.

Do you remember your shopping experiences with other family members? uncle? aunt? grandparents?

In Oujda, one of my favorites shopping days is Saturday when mom heads to the fish market (isnide the old Medina @ Bab Sidi Abdelwahhab). Now, that is a completely different scene with a different definition of smell freshness. If we get Sardines, I know we're eating it flat opened marinated and either fried or grilled. If we get Sole, it'll be breaded and golden fried, and if we get Ray I'd be drooling on the way home. Some of the best Ray tajines were made in my place. In our family, as far as I can remember, Saturday was always fish day. I have no clue why!

Adnane, I'm surprised that back then, your mother went to the souk and in Oujda (known to be extremely conservative). I don't ever recall my mother going to the souk, not even the the local Mohamedia daily Marche. My father did all the shopping. I used to beg him to take me with him to the marche on Sunday so he dragged me along once a while. He would take the car and park it at the very entrance of the market and speed walk through the market alley with me running behind him not daring to ask him to slow down so he would take me with him again. Quite frankly, shopping with him wasn't that much fun. I was just happy to get out of the four walls and watch what I thought of back then as funny people; men with straw hats and rain boots holding out their produce and praising it with a proud smile showing their missing teeth. My father didn't bargain with anyone, he pointed with his finger and said 3 kilos, walked to the next stand and said 4 kilos... the errand boy with the innocent yet intimidating look comes running to pick up all the merchandise as my father paid and I get closer to my father and hold tight to his pants. Ten minutes is all I get to enjoy in the marche. He walks in and out, never revisiting the same merchant, gets everything that we needed and walks back to the car.
I can't wait for the farm next door to open.
