Hijab: Strict Code or Fashion Barcode
11:35:04 AM Saturday Nov 4, 2006

Another season from Ali, premiering with subtle observations on wearing Hijjab. The episode does not discuss the reason for Hijjab and does not suggest to wear Hijjab. I think it's targetted for those who already wear Hijjab. A lot of what he says is true and as always FUNNY! The Hijjab topic is gaining momentum in Muslim countries. I'd be sitting with familly having dinner and watching an Arab TV channel say dubai, and there would appear a woman wearing a fancy scarf, heavy makeup and tight clothes. A conversation pops up at the table. It's interesting to see that in the same familly, where there exists women with Hijjab, without or halfway there, everyone has their own opinion about how to wear it!

How do you feel about Hijjab in general? is it an obligation or an option? and when worn, should the woman be left to interpret its look based on her fashion taste and comfort? or is there a predefined code that needs to be followed?

Paul this is all based on your understanding of contemporary Christian and biblical accounts of the story of Adam & Eve. Have you read the Quran to learn what the Islamic account of Adam & Eve is all about?

Because Adam and Eve were created in the image of God, I believe they were not corrupted with lust or anything shameful. I do not believe the "image of God" is corrupt. When they rebelled and agreed with the satanic temptation they received the promise of God, "You shall surely die." Their hearts then were corrupted and they could no longer stand unashamed before God. The died spiritually. They could no longer eat of the tree of life that was in the garden and God forced them to leave Eden. God also provided a covering by killing an animal and giving them the hide as a covering for their nakedness. Adam stood around and let Eve be deceived and then ate out of her hand the forbidden fruit. Adam should have took his God-given authority and told the serpent to leave, but he failed in his responsibility as a man to protect his wife from the deception. Because Adam and Eve were granted dominion in the earth in God's perfect created order, when they fell into sin they forsook their authority and yielded their authority to satan. After pointing fingers and a "blame it" party, God got them to admit their failures and he announced judgments. A promised "seed" would crush Satan later and reclaim authority. Death and corruption came. Adam and Eve could fellowship with God again after they repented, but not in the perfect shameless way previous to their fall. God needed to provide a sacrifice (probably a sheep) for Adam and Eve to be covered. Without God providing the covering, Adam and Eve were ashamed before him. All corruption in creation passed through Adam and Eve from satan into the world. Repentance is a requirement of God for all sin, but we need more than repentance, we need forgiveness and covering and renewal.

I believe God loves intimacy with people- not perverse intimacy, but something even more intimate than human sexuality. If people who are created in the image of God desire intimacy and love and communication more than anything, would it be reasonable that God would be an intimate, loving and communicating God. Israel was often described as God's bride in the books of Jewish prophecy. Most often the connotation was negative because of Israel's apostasy and sin. Still God desired her return. In New Testament Christianity the Church is also referred to as the Bride of Christ- Jesus' chosen corporate partner for all of eternity. God created love and romance because it is in His Nature. He does not need fellowship with people like you or I might need water to live, but He does reveal Himself as fiery romantic lover in many prophecies especially Hosea, Ezekiel and early in Jeremiah. I won't even mention the Song of all Songs.

It may sound kind of crazy but one of my great pleasures is writing love songs for my God. I am a guy and not gay, but I love spiritual intimacy with my God.

I may get some flack but I'll throw out a few lyrics of one song:

I want nothing more
than to fall in love with you
I want nothing less
than to know romance that's true
Won't you come and cover me
in the fullness of your grace
I just want to lose myself
in your passionate embrace

You are the lover of my life
You are the reason that I sing
You are the throb of my heart beat
My all in all, my everything
You are my more or less
You are my better than the rest
You simply are the best
You are my faithful friend
We'll be together to the end
You're unequaled among men

And I want nothing more...
than to fall in love with you.

Add a little piano and we got some worship!

Paul, Islam teaches that Adam & Eve were not corrupt nor lawless, nor did they "pass on" corruption and lawlessness. The Quranic explanation is quite simple. Satan tempted Adam, who had been warned by God not to approach a certain tree, by telling him that tree would grant him immortalilty and eternal wealth. Adam made a mistake by disobeying God, but he quickly repented. It is not the man who is the problem, nor his lust (that's human nature and both men and women have it - that's part of how God made us as human beings), nor is the woman the problem. Satan's temptations are the problem. We can choose to either resist them (maybe by dressing modestly, that could be one way), or give in to them.

"What if he would give us a new heart with a new nature that is like His" - what would be the point of a God who is like his own creatures? then we'd all want to be Gods.. and then what about God's sex life??? how are we supposed to be like a superior being who doesn't need or have any partners, sexual or otherwise??? :o)

I believe the wearing of the Hijab in Islamic cultures has some positive motives similiar to conservative dress in other cultures. Reducing sin and sex outside of wedlock is a noble goal. Adam and Eve were naked and unashamed because they were uncorrupted like God when they were created. When they became lawless and sinned they became ashamed and corrupted. Lust is part of the lawless corruption that entered into mankind and corrupted mankind. Marriage was created before the fall of man and is God's perfect and only plan for sexual expression. Because of the corruption that has been passed on since Adam and Eve mankind has struggled with lust and sexual immorality. Some people refuse to fight the corruption within and give themselves over to the pleasures of the corrupt nature. They indulge in lust, illicit sex, and perversions. Other people resist the corruption and try to eliminate illicit behaviors. Women that dress revealingly on purpose as glamorized in the media are seducing men toward sin. All men are weak toward such seduction. The hijab is a form of regulation on temptation. The real problem is in the corruption of the heart. Lust in the heart of a man is not fixed by the extravagant coverage that a woman's hajib provides. He is lustful because his heart is lustful, and the more he watches porn or indulges in illicit sex the more that corruption controls him. The problem is that men think women are their problem. If a man is surrounded by lustful seductive women, the women are a problem. But if the women are just living conservative lives as human beings, the lust of men is their problem. The hajib is therefore not a solution but a regulator for men. I believe that God created women as the most beautiful object of all creation. A women that is conservatively dressed is the greatest example of beauty on the earth. Whorish fashions pervert the beauty of a woman to seduce and manipulate men. I believe the hajib is an over-reaction based on the lust of men. Women should be able to dress modestly and still be pure expressions of diversified beauty. Coverage and fashion should go together. The real issue is the issues of the heart. Sin in the heart means that corruption must be dealt with within. Be honest, all the struggle and resistance of sin at the heart level is very painful. The resistance of sin is a warfare that at times seems impossible to win.

What if God has a solution to the fall of mankind? What if he would give us a new heart with a new nature that is like His that is more powerful than the corruption. When I received Jesus' payment for my sin, I also received His Holy nature-- I was born again. Sin and corruption are still in my body, but my the Spirit of God working through the new spirit and heart God has given me is more powerful than lust and I do not have to sin as I fellowship with Him like Adam and Eve fellowshipped with God in the garden of Eden.

Well, I always think of wearing Hijab but it's a very tiresome decision. Hijab is meant to protect women from being scrutinized and harrassed by men's stares. It is meant to reduce sins and any thoughts of sex out of wedlock. Hijab is not restricting women's liberation, it is only regulating social life and preventing any misconduct by both men and women.

Let's face it, women are attractive creatures and sex is an innate desire that we all men and women are born with and if Allah had not put certain restrictions in all religions, human kind would be living in a jungle and ceding to all kinds of indecent behavior.

When Adam and Eve saw each other for the first time after they ate from the tree of knowlege they both discovered they were naked and started to take off some leaves from the tree to cover their naked bodies. What do you sugggest this means?

It is true that physical hijab only does not always do the job, it is the hijab of the soul and the mind that helps in achieving Allah's goal from hijab. If people would wear hijab to hide whatever brings out sex desires, stop wearing tight jeans exhibiting buttocks, tight tops showing the shape of large bosoms and heavy make up emphasizing the voluptuous lips and act and behave by following the example of our Prophet Mohamed (Peace Be Upon Him) then I will call that Hijab. But just putting on a scarf just does not fullfill the intention.

Hijab is not just an islamic dress code, it is the dress that most spiritual and other religious sects call for. Virgin Mary is always depicted wearing long dress covering all her body and sometimes covering her head, the Amish women wear long loose dresses, female jews shave off their hair and wear long loose dresses as well. It is only in early 1900s that western women started to shorten up their dresses, it is only in mid 1900s that western women started to wear pants. It is secularism that presented the new dress code for women. My point is that please do not fall in the trap of hijab misconception. It is not just an islamic trend. It is a social, cultural and religious code of showing respect towards each other. I hope this is not long and boring.
Please pray for me so that I wear hijab before it is too late.

The hijjab thing revolves around reducing sex appeal. Maybe a society with less emphasis on or dramatization of sex appeal is a better one? I don't know, but we're taught by religion that it helps society. And let's face it, hijjab alone is not going to reduce sex appeal. If the woman is a flirt deep inside and enjoys showing off sex appeal, she will find a way to get there, whether through words, looks, gestures, movements, etc. The same goes for men, they could wear all the respectful clothes they can wear, but if they're looking for lust, they'll find a way.

i totally agree with the bro who said that he doesnt judge a book by its cover. its the personality and the intentions that count. Everybody can wear a scarf...

i wear one, it covers the parts that are needed to be covered, but it is in a fashionable way... I personnaly dont take that its wrong to do that. I blend in at work and school. People find it easier to talk to me about my religion because of it. And i dont want people to judge me by my scarf. Wearing a scarf for me is more than just obeing the rules. It protects me (from the system if u will) .

I agree with hudhud, Salaat is the most important thing, and i dont get it either when people wear a scarf but dont pray. But i think those women wear it for cultural reasons.

Anywayzz live and let live, only God can judge and can see what their (and mine) real intentions are.. ;)

wa salaam aleykoem

ps: dont mind my english, i have to work on it i know :S.. love this site ;)

"but I don't judge a book by it's cover.

the perfect answer to a most interesting debate. when I was visiting my cousins during ramadan, this discussion came up several times, especially b/c a lot of girls we knew made that decision to start wearing it during ramadan. I remember one day I got so pissed at someone. I told her what's the point of a piece of cloth on a girl's head if she doesn't even pray?! forget the scarf and learn salaat first. the prophet never said if a girl doesn't wear a scarf she's not muslim anymore - but he did say the difference between a muslim and kafir is "tark assalaat" - rejecting the prayer. this debate is just like the ramadan debate: people who fast all of ramadan but never pray. it's become cultural tradition rather than spiritual observance. maybe because fasting and wearing a scarf/beard are obvious - people can see and judge based on them easily.

In most muslim countries now on the streets you see all kinds of hijab - exactly how Baba Ali described it in the video. Perhaps we often don't understand what the meaning is behind it? what does hijab symbolize and represent? I saw a lot of women wearing hijabs oua lakin al akhlaq makache. and what about the niyah? innama ala3malou binniyat. and the same goes for the guys wearing beards and the ppl who fast ramadan but never observe the other core pillars of islam.
in any case talk is cheap, implementation is tough, and that's for sure....

I kind of wish Baba Ali wore and modeled the hijab styles he talks about. that would have been even funnier ;o)

Nowadays in Morocco, there are the "gulf air hostess" type of Hijabs in the streets, they look nice... but I don't judge a book by it's cover.
Hijab is the easy part, X dirhams can get you one with the design of your choice. But a personality and character, you cann't buy that from anywhere...
If the Hijab would represent the wings, the rest of the Islamic teachings would make the Angel .
Become an angel first, then worry about the wings ...
So you end up with 3 "Hijabic scenarios" :
A walking Angel, A demon with wings, an Angel with wings .
Any body who is respectful towards others and does the right thing, deserves respect. would she be a woman without Hijab or a man without beard . wal 3akso Sahih ...

That's my opinion...
Antr, growing beard as it is getting cold.
