The Hammam Public Bath: Do you still go there?
12:00:00 AM Sunday Jul 13, 2003

Public baths, these steamy places are still part of the urban landscape of societies cultured by the Ottomans and the Spanish Moors, especially in North Africa and Turkey. Women go to the Hammams to clean their bodies, get massages, socialize and hear the latest gossip. Of course the same goes for men in their own Hammam, but this topic is for women.

Hammams usually have at least 2 nested rooms, the deeper the room is the smaller it gets, the steamier it gets, the hotter it gets, and the thougher you have to be to stay there for longer than 2 minutes. Preferrably one should settle in the outter room. Settling usually means, for most hammams, finding an empty spot by the tiled wall and ground and putting your bathing material there to declare your territory. Next step is to quickly find a minimum of 2 empty dlou or Biada (plural for Bidou). You will mix hot and cold water in them. In every traditional Hammam, there are two sources of water, one for cold, other for sizzling HOT. These sources fill two big bassins called (Barmat, plurat for Barma). Each Barma has a dedicated small bucket (mini Bidou) made usually from Black thick tire rubber, aluminum or wood, used to scoop the water from the bassin and then fill your Biada. You'll have to do it yourself, and it may take you 2 or 3 rountrips from the Barma to your spot before you fill up. Barmat usually have lines of bathers waiting to fill their Biada; good opportunity to socialize, but you may get eyes rolling at you if you're moving too slow. Someone may even volunteer and help you out to keep it moving.

Once you have your warm water ready in your Biada you go ahead and relax in your spot or lay down on the warm tiled ground. You may hire a person (Tayyaba) to exfoliate, massage and rub all of your body. Tayyabat (plural for Tayyaba) also acts as the coordinator of Barmat traffic.

So, do you girls still go to the Hammam? what do you like about it? what do you hate about it? Any memories?

I am 6 years late to add to this topic, but I cannot resist to share my love to the public bath. I love to go there every week and stay for about 3 hours. We Moroccans are interesting. I do not think there are many people who would spend more than 30 minutes taking a bath. When I go there, I sing Cheba Zahouania's "Alhamam al ghali jaw lik labnat." It is a slow song that go along with scrubbing my skin. I just love it!

Akh Khayibaba,

Akh Khayibaba,

unfortunatlly,we forgot to talk about 7amammat`costs...they told me that the price is almost 8 dhs. to as a dollar maker it`s cheap.
But concider that most of the population have a modest salary.
So imagine a family with 4 kids!!!!! that`s too much......

ok i understand what you feel. but here what one of them has told me: some of "lkassala" like what they do it's less work for them than a worker on the field. they have flexibale hours, like some 7ammamte they have women from 8am to 8pm and guys the other time. some of "kassala" they don't have any level of education of some and that is the only the job that they can get and i agree with negotiator it's better this way than some illigal stuff. PLUS the interacte with direffent people from different social levels some of the clients come weekly and they tip good other monthly or even some have thier privite 7ammame at home they "rent" one of 2 kassala to come for like 2o or 3 hours and they get really good money out of this. some kassala ask you for a favor if he knows you well enought to ask you that . see it's all about connections

sanita we always hear stories like that in public places where rumors hit the top.nothing is scary about hammams as long as there is no bush or rumsfield there. they might smell WMD's and it's not agreable to be close to them in a hot steamy room.
by the way can you guys imagine dick cheney in a small room of lhammam!!! his stomach popping out, foggy glasses asking for "7mmad lkiass" to call a doctor because his artificial heart isn't working!!
what will 7mmad do?
1-call the police.
2-call hospital al farabi.
3-turn around and ask "lfarna9" to add more wood to fire.
FYI :"lfarna9" is the guy who controls the temperture of least in oujda we call him so.

Casawi you are so lucky. don't forget to get "lkssal or lkiass" to stretch you bones, tell him that you came from the US so he can provide "dollars "service.
you also have to ask Adnane to make some raioo kiyassa with lkhmissa on it that can keep "l3ain" out and spank whoever wants to steal it.
when you get out from lhamam say "raioohma hadi" instead of "rahma hadi" :) :)

This is a cool web site for women of the Maghreb, but it'd be much cooler without those annoying popups! Khaoula

and that Hammam they have there looks very good!!!! nice little clean swimming pool... I remember in Oujda there is a Hammam called Belqashour, it was the same as this one, had a little shallow pool in the middle where water pours from a warm source. You go down there a few steps, either to scoop water into your bucket, or lay down there in the warm shallow waters discuss politics or the girl next door. Around the pool, there were many people sitting in their spots enjoying. I think that was one of the best Hammams I've seen in Morocco.

Hi khoti al maghariba!!!!
Because of being a reall moraccan I can tell u that moroccan 7mmam is one of the best thing we have....but unfortunatlly some of them are really dirthy and even this case I can blame the women ...I am sorry ladies{I am a lady and what I am telling u is a honest experience.
Every time I went to 7ammam {in my nieghbor }at the door I smelt smt stinky and I did`t know what is it after many time I discovered that some women use {ocrole} this is a hair dressing very famous in make thier hair soft. it`s ok ! but why they use it in the 7ammam ?
Because of my health condition I can`t bear this kind of smell....but on the same time I love to go to 7ammam.......
Now I heard from my Mom that there are many modern 7ammamate clean ones....that make me fell happy and now I can`t wait.....

That's the most nostalgic topic, nice memories.
When I was a teenger, I hated lhemam I prefered taking my bath at home just because we used to go every weekend and it was full and hot.
Now, I would give anything to go to lhemam everyday. when I go back home, I try to go as much as I can.
just a correction of the word : bidou, it's l9eb not bidou, a bidou is a plastic jar.Nowdays, hemmam is also evoluating, you don't sit anymore on the flour but u bring your own plastic chair for the sake of protection from germs, I wanna finish all the steps a woman does in a hamam.
so Once you fill up all the 9bab you have, you go to the warmest room to get warm " sekhen" so when u rub every corner of your body, the dead skin goes out easily. You keep rubbing from 20 to 48 min until no dead skin is coming out. (cha3riya).
The next step is the hair, you first use Alghassoul, then shampoo then the conditionner. some use lhenna before alghassoul.
when you put the conditionner and leave it for a while, meanwhile, you put henna mixed with lemon and water all over your body and face, you leave it from 5 min to 10min, so you can have a nice tan.
then you wash everything, your body with a nice body wash and your hair from the conditionner. You have spent 1 hour to 2 hours in a hammam. and all you smell fresh.
I miss lhamam, I never fought in a hamam.
what I didn't like is raizor (rasoir) were everywhere. Some women don't go trash them in the garbage and sometimes you see some kids playing with them.
I invite guys to tell us about their memories as boys in a women hamam
then y

This discussion Jogged my memory under category l7amam, and I recalled happy, joyful, skin-reeking and suffocating times. There was one and only one 7amam we liked most for the only reason that is cleanness. I dreaded undressing under glass-piercing glimpses of strangers. After we enter into the realms of spas and blend in with many other strangers for a washing venture, I find myself hardly able to breath and many times requesting to transfer to the cooler room, ?lbared?. I hated that part even though I had the most thrilling desire to go lay with the grownups in the hottest room, ?Sskhoun?, it was a real challenge! Maan!! I also hated ?Lkassal? for his mean and certainly not a shy way of scrubbing your skin. I?ve always demanded to be spared the ?luxury?, I?d call it chore, of having a personal ?kassal?, just let me go about my own business!
Yeah! Sometimes I?d meet a ?weld derb?, man, we?d turn the place into a playground, running, sliding on feet, stomach, kicking shampoo bottles around, and marking our territorial zones with buckets of water. That was fun! In the aftermath we?d savor the sweet out of those icy, juicy oranges we kept cool in the fridge, then we?d hit the caf? for a cold, refreshing glass of milk with ?sirosport 7mer?,a lot to say but when do I stop?!

Even then I never liked l7amam, let that be men?s or ladies?, and I remember both :). I still prefer home edition of l7amam, but may be now I?d like going back to the ladies? 7amam :)
Cockroaches! That I?ve never seen, or I simply blocked out of my memory as a result of a defense mechanism. I don?t recall anything about the architecture except for ?l9bab?, which I thought looked cool.

L7amam, keep it home.

Peace N Love

The slippery tiles and Sarraq zit in the old-fashioned restroom of the Hammam.. and they're not your average or small sarraq ziiit, they're HUGE, long, dark, and with very long antennas! they fly in the restroom, they may end up on your lower back while you're kneeing.. :\

Honestly, I feel impressed I used to use it and tolerate it.. There's no way I can use it now.

As far as i'm concerned, going to hamam is one of my favorite thing to do in morocco... wow i feel so relaxed and so clean actually i feel like i'm a new women ...but the thing that i hate about hamamm is the slippry tiles..Oh my gish! i remember melli zla9t avec un stal de l'eau froid( hehe) actually it's kinda my fault cause i don't wear sandals in the hammam.. However, i still love the hammam and it's gonna be the first thing that i'm gonna do when i go to morocco....
Peace and Love

The encient Arabs called Hammam "Attabib Al Abkam" (the deaf doctor). and I agree with that to a certain extend...
I go to the Hammam when ever I get the chance, it is not just about getting properly clean , but also because hammam provides you with that peacefulness and relaxed feeling afterwards.
It is true that it can be a serious project for some folks to dig up themselves out of the layers of dead skin and hamri covering their "true self"... :) . but in general I would avoid crowded hammams simply by ovoing the rush hours and days...
Since childhood, I hated the echoing screams and shoutings in hammam, but always loved to lay on my back and count the falling drops from the ceiling.

During a visit to Istanbul, I went to their Hammam. (they have kessaL too!) they would give you a towel to put it around your waist, and the inner side of the hammam is beautifully designed in an oriental style (like in the picture above) , having a plate form of marbre in the middle of each room, were one could lay on as to get heated up.
the experience was nice...

Up here in Finland, roughly every house hold is equiped with a sauna, it cleans up the body provides the same relaxation and stress relief as a hammam does.
So I use it every weekend .

Ok, no women are talking about Hammam here :] I take it the new generation of women don't go to Hammam anymore.. no? As for dirt in old-fashioned Hammam, I have to agree with you.. It's unbelievale! but somehow, and I don't know how, I have been able to tolerate during my childhood and teenage years. Maybe the Hammamat I used to go weren't as dirty as others.. I don't know. But I remember the grounds were clean. All you do is wash them once or twice by pouring a bucket of hot water, and then it's yours! As for the new modern Hammam, a big turnoff is they're expensive! and they don't have the charm of traditional Hammam.. hmm maybe the dirt factor has developed as a charm? I don't buy that, but there's something about it.. way be the fact that you feel comfortable being around people from middle and poor class, people of the Sha3b, I think that's what it is!!!

5:46 pm    July 13, 2003
Hammam is not actually a bad place to go to. The thing is, which hammam are you picking? Most of traditional Hammams are a dirth zone; However, you can still enjoy the relaxation and cleaniness in some new modern ones. Of course you gotta pay some extra money, but it's worth it since you will feel what a regular bath can't offer you.

Cya 'round Guys!
Peace Maker.

Hammam is the dirtiest public place in Morocco
Thanks Allah I give up going there since 1991
I can?t even imagine going there even to ask for directions
KABAHA Allah Elfaqr and really very sad the majority
Of Moroccan can?t afford to have bathroom at home
And 1% have palaces just locked and unused

Actually one think you notice about old-fashioned Hammamat in Morocco is the lack of ornaments, lack of garnished architecture, good material, and in some hammamt even lack of cleaniness. A clean Hammam reflects good manager, owner and patron. These patrons are rare however. In the old days, in 1800s Hammam were an important business and only the wealthy used to own them. By mid 1800, the wealthy started feeling the impact of the industrial revolution and switched their focus to other businesses. Hammamat since then were picked up only by the poor patrons, and usually frequented by the middle but especially the poor class. In fact, that's why you see they lack the great architecture and ornaments they used to enjoy before 1800s.
