On the subject of Evil Eye
11:20:21 AM Tuesday Oct 25, 2005

First of all, I didn't know how to categorize the subject of evil eye in the several categories I've already setup in raioo. I didn't want to spiritualize it, or sociolize it, or put it under relationships, or under fun. The People category seemed handy, but I finally decided to place it under Health. I think it's a good match.

So, I've never really believed in evil eye despite the fact that in my culture it is common for people to justify many calamities by it. How can a gaze from a person's eye cause bad luck, health disorder or even death. I just thought it was metaphysical, but above all I was not aware of any mention of evil eye in the doctrine of Islam, the Quran or Ahadith. It seems that it is widely spread in Muslim and Jewish communities. Until recently as I was reading the Tafsir of Sourat Al-Qalam, I came across a verse that started to change my opinion. The verse, as the scholar Sabouni in his Safwatou Attafassir thinks, suggests that God mentions that evil eye could cause harm to a person. The verse is as follows:

English (Yusuf Ali):
68:51 And the Unbelievers would almost trip thee up with their eyes when they hear the Message; and they say: "Surely he is possessed!"

68:51 Peu s'en faut que ceux qui m?croient ne te transpercent par leurs regards, quand ils entendent le Coran, ils disent: "Il est certes fou!".

I have never really believed strongly in evil eye, and usually justify calamities on the concept of causality. But may be, maybe there is something about people with envy that could temporarily screw up your plans. Wallahou a3lam.

fascinating.. i wonder what the jewish stories behind the symbol could be.. this makes me want to dig up my gold khamssa that my mom hid ages ago :P

mih mih sounds like a lot of work, dunno if i'd be brave enough to try it. last weekend i made maqrout it was good! didn't age it needless to say ;) but it was definitely hard to make. the texture is really tricky, measure everything by eye and by hand, fistfuls of dough at a time, and shaping it without the proper molds and tools was a pain, not to mention when frying it can easily crack even if you're not extremely gentle and flip only once. the maqrout of constantine is (za3ma ;) the best b/c they are able to perfect the texture and present it with no cracks at all.. but i wouldn't know, all i remember from when i visited is the taste ;) it's definitely worth it if you have someone to help, i plan to make a second batch next weekend, along with ktaif, and maybe m7encha that i've been craving so badly.. when i was a kid we had a neighbor from qnitra and her m7encha was a-ma-zing..

voila, maqrout ingredients:
zebda/butter (lots)
water (very little, otherwise dough gets hard)
maa zahr/orange blossom water
l3ajwa - dates paste filling, rubbed with a bit of oil and cinnamon

dough to butter: 3 to 1 (ex. 3 c. ssmide to 1 c. zebda) when frying. if you want to bake it, use more butter, and make sure your oven is really good and very hot. back home when it's baked it's sent to the boulangerie, b/c most home ovens just aren't good enough.

Otherreligions have this eye and hand thing as well. Jewish people have the hand with the eye in it and sometimes a serpent sliding about the fingers. I was invited to this party once and I was sporting my very hip necklace that has the hand and the eye in it. And this guy hears my accent and starts to talk to me in hebrew. I thought it was berber so I responded in a little broken figuig berber. Then we just looked at each other with bewildered eyes realizing we are talking totally different languages. So it turns out the guys was from Israel and he saw my necklace and thought I was from Israel too. He said to me, "the hand and the eye is a very common symbol in my country." I told him there were a lot of jewish people in Morocco and so maybe we got it from them a long time ago, like so many traditions that we have (anyone remembers the 'nayer.')

And then we went to Morocco this summer and Joc sees this necklace made out of silver that has the hand and the eye in it and she says: "this is the eye of Fatima." So I think it's called the eye of Fatima in other places. Check out this picture:

And finally regarding mih mih, I finally caved and called home. So here we go:
1 cup semolina
1.5 cup flour
1 tsp salt
warm water
knead it real good, but make sure it's not hard dough or to fluid. just right (what that means)
let it sit for a little as you prepare the tchermila:
onions, jalepeno, m3dnous, paprika, olive oil pepper and salt, cook this tchermila a little bit, make sure it does not harden.
Now cut the dough into small pieces, like half an egg size
Flatten it using oil until you get fery thin layers (2.8 nanometers should do)
layer the sheets with this onion stuff in between them. Put several layers together. The technique: put an empty dough sheet, rub the tchermila on it, put another sheet on top, let the bottom side cook, when it's slightly cooked, flip the whole thing put the chermila on it then cover with another sheet and cook then flip it and repeat until you get a nice loaf of mih mih.

I am doing the explanation justice because it is hard for me to describe mechanical processes (likely why I am not an engineer.) But it is very tasty

on the subject of the evil eye, i wonder how the lore of the khamsa as a protective charm first evolved.. presumably the hand is supposed to ward off the bad looks, though we know from a religious perspective that we're forbidden from putting our faith in material things like talismans and lucky charms. but i wonder how old this symbol is.
when i was little every eid or special occasion, my mom would make us kids read mou3awithat and ayat elkursi into our hands then wipe over our head and face. i used to get really annoyed with my mom about it, but now i wonder if that's part of how the hand symbolism of the khamsa came about..

I strongly believe that nothing can happen to the person unless God has willed for it to. This concept marginalizes this evil eye and puts it in the corner of superstition, in my mind.

As for the ayah below, I am no mufassir, but when I read it I have the image of these people who really dislike this guy and keep giving him bad looks as though they believe they can hurt him with their look.

When good or bad happens, always thank God. This guy said in a speech that a lot of people were exchanging over the net not long ago (I think they even made it into a song): sometimes you're ahead, sometimes your behind; such is life. The evil might well be the person's own eye through which he sees himself either ahead or behind... hahahaaa. that just cracked me up. Not sure why... Ramadan gets me at exactly 3pm :)

I remember something else that this economist said once (I think it was Kindelberger): the thing that will always cause the person to become irrational is to see his best friend become rich (or get ahead in life or whatever; I paraphrase.)

Now back to serious stuff. I think there is a hadith that talks about the evil eye. I am not sure if it's a sahih or not, but it says something like "al3ynu tarmi bilmar'i filqabr kamaa tarmi biljamali filqadr." Meaning the evil eye can send the person to the grave as it can send the camel to the ..hmm .. cooking bowl or the stove. I must really be hungry because now I am craving camel eventhough I don't really like it.

So anyway, I don't think the hadith is sahih. It was probably just a proverb.

What happened to the mih mih recipe? Nobody knows how to make it!? Mean eye mih mih.

this fascinates me.. I also questioned that someone having an evil eye could in and of itself cause a person harm, initially to me it didn't make sense. Two things helped me understand and realize this reality.. first I understood what the reality of 7assad/envy is. basically someone wishes "zawal anni3mah" from you.. they wish they had whatever good thing you have, and not that you *both* have it equally (which would be "ghibttah" - a kinder more generous form of jealousy if you will..).
secondly, I was told when I asked about this that it's not the look or eye itself that causes the pain. when something painful (or pleasant for that matter) has happened to us, we have to accept first of all that it's part of our destiny (qadaa and qadar) and that there's actually a good reason (7ikmah) behind it, whether we know it or not. next, I was told to remember "Qoul lan yasseebana illaa ma kataballahou lana" so a person cannot cause you harm or pain unless Allah has willed for that pain to befall you, or that event to happen to you.

I'm really curious to know what you found in tafsir assabouni for that particular verse? how does he explain "layouzliqounaka?" does it mean zelqa as we commonly say, to slip/fall or is it symbolic of something?
