The Education System in Morocco

When Moroccans chat about the weaknesses of Morocco, they usually bring up a common factor: the weak education system. But what is exactly this weakness ? How weak is weak? And to be fair, what solutions you believe Morocco can implement to improve the education system or process?

On a complementary note, what do you think the strength of Morocco's education system are? And how can the state maintain these strengths, and make them even stronger?

Please be specific when you discuss for the benefit of everyone. Try to avoid excessive complaining about the education system, but if you do back it up with specifics and solutions!

Art education for children? You can get in touch with Rabat American School, The british concil for possibilities or just for information. There might be some possibilities, in the middle and high class schools for children from 3 to 6 years old in cities like Rabat and Casablanca in the education private sector. It's worth searching. Good luck.

I am new to and want to know what folks think about bringing art education to Morocco. I want to teach children fiber arts and painting. Don't know where to start or who to connect with. Anybody out there have any leads. I am trying to live and work in Morocco by doing what I love to do most - Art. My husband is Moroccan and doesn't think my idea is worth pursuing but I believe that art is a way to expand the mind and create outside of the box.

I have had my share of the Moroccan system of education both at the high school level and at the university level, and I was exposed to more than three foreign education systems, so I can engage in some comparative analysis.

The first weakness that we should overcome is the fact that the ministerial portfolio of education obeys partisan lines (hizb al istiklaal screwed our system of education after screwing foreign affairs). We should not trust politicians (especially belly-owners) with education.

The second weakness is the lack of a research environment, and in some areas even a living environment (walking three hours to the remote school at the peak of a mountain seems enjoyable for alpinists not kids, and even when alpinists do enjoy it they would not like to come near any Math lecture).

The third weakness is that it is disconnected from the job market. At the fac of eco they still teach texts from th efifties about les masses laborieuses.

Professors should be paid well. More money should be put on schools. A diversity in classes is needed.

The strength of the Moroccan system is that it is FREE.
It also forms tough people through tough environments. I remember, as students in college takaddoum in Rabat, that we were exposed to all scenarios one cannot imagine. One time, a guy in my class pissed in a toolbox of another guy and guess what, in a class of tarbiyya islamiyya.

I think we need to start looking at this section again! Baghi-Tikar made a great contribution with his idea for book donations. We need more inputs here to shake things up there! Let's keep the momentum going and the spirit high! Every single person can make a difference!

Curently, education in Morocco takes 30% of the country's general budget !!!

It is not an easy task for a country who's main income relies on tourism and Lizimigri .

12:50 am    July 25, 2003
Another thing:Believe me we have the budget for education but we spend in other issues(u know what i am talking about sahara for ex).
By the way you know this anectod: the minister guy who urged the reform for "arabisation", his kids were studying at la mission fran?aise.
This is morroco, if we have the chance to see on coherent guy being minister of education and really taking his subject seriously, i am sure progress will be made in ashort time!
But is there any will to educate ALL morrocan poeple.? that is the question i am wondering about...

12:43 am    July 25, 2003
are you kidding adnane?. morrocan companies only care about one thing: money and speculation, sponsorship of education is considered only if they cannhire people whith low salaries(i know what i am talking about 'cause i saw it in forums we organised at school).
Sponsorship has one inconvenient: independance of education.
I saw some schools sponsored by pepsi or coke in the us: they have tv with ads even in the toilets!!!
But well i guess every system has its disadvantages...

10:59 pm    July 24, 2003
be cool as chid
u can't apply this in a place that refuse change.
im sorry i don't want sound ( - ) but just look around and see who is our minister of education...and check his backgound and u will understand what im talking about...

Antr, you stole my words I was just going to say :0 about companies sponsoring schools and universities.

Where I work, the company fosters education system not only in the form of giving yearly grants and donations to universities engineering labs, developing buildings for them etc, but also offering courses to high school teachers, and refining their knowledge. They found out here that many high school teachers lack hands-on experience on what they're teaching, asa result they present the material poorly to the students who end up not absorbing the essence of the course.

I don't see why this cannot happen in Morocco. We have many private companies, and some large government companies, they should look also into these kind of social interactions besides worrying only about making profits in their own business. I think it's a question of creativity and independent thinking. It takes one company to start this fashion and do it well, to set an example for others to follow.

As to make the budget reserved for the education less hard to provided by the governement, some oriented counties came up with the following solutions:
Colleges and institutes are sponsored by companies, where virtually everybody is in title to get in, and the end of each year, the students are provided with a summer jobs where the companies as well as the students are the beneficials.
the students get the chance to learn what they can do with what they have learned, the companies get the juice out of some talented students and a humble cost...

Here, Labs at companies as well as universities have given birth to several creations at the "expense" of the students, Linux O.S is one of them.

The futur on any nation these days, depends mostly on the education of it's poeple, it's true assests are not its raw materials, minerals anymore...but rather on the creativity of it's poeple. (that's where the real profit is!)
Most of the modern inventions nowadays are by large made of spare parts fabricated in countries from all over the planete (or knowledge collected from
different locations...)

Morocco is far from reaching the model above due the several obstacles we are all aware of...But Rome was not built in one day.
Never the less, it is promissing to hear that, it has become compalsory to study until the age of 15 !
As for allowing the teacher in Morocco to correct the test of his own students, that wouldnt work, because the Moroccans by large lack "100%" honesty...It is still up to "who do you know..."

But , ones the parents realise how education is more important than the short term income or "success" , their kids will get the message too. the problem is when you have most of the parents as ignorants, that makes the matter challenging...But, just everything else, nothing in life comes without sacrifice and patience...

I hope that someday, the investemenst in Morocco will shift from building hotels and restaurants, towards building institutes and schools with an updated education system able to compete with the others in the futur.
It is a slow process, but that is the only way out towards a true economic independance.

The models are out there to pick up ideas from...what is lacking the true will
to do what it takes to achieve that...But that will have to happen, because it is a matter of survival or extinction.

the strength of morrocan education system: math and science.People who are good at that usally find they way out of the bled!
autres faiblesse: teachers are very badly paid and you should see the material conditions of teachers for ex in some poor villages of the rif: the are discouraged, specially women teachers who find themselves in a hostile environement.

The situation in Morocco does not foster personal development for everyone, but that can be changed. I believe that the major root that should be given immediate focus is the education system. Here are some of the proposals I suggest to whoever is in charge of Education in Morocco

- Introduce class credits to give flexibility to choose and learn to be responsible for your track,

- Introduce more electives to choose from

- Review teachers and professors extensively not only by a domestic review, but also invite representatives of other leading education systems (India, USA, Russia, Greece, Israel, Scandinavia) to review our teachers.

- Make sure teachers/professors are quizzing their students on material presented to them, material they understand. If students don't understand, suspect the teacher and review him or her

- Let teachers test their students instead of the National exams. If you insist on National exams, at least have the teachers correct the papers of their own students; they know best what material they covered.

- Introduce clubs and organizations, student body, to schools, to encourage students to excercise more roles, prepare them for future social life.

- Minimize overwhelming Math material, and let that be part of higher education. Teach the usefull Calculus and Logic

- Teach how to make an argument, how to talk, how to read, how to ask questions.

- Award performing teachers in public, and let students review their teachers and classes anonymousely.

- Build more and more public libraries, encourage private bookstores,

- Introduce summer jobs or volunteer work for students

- Encourage parents and famillies to be an integral part of school and the student's life, invite them to school events, dinners, parties, round-table discussions, debates, BUILD a relationship between the parents and the student, while the relationship of the parent and the son/daughter is growing outside of school.

- Take great care of those who cannot afford school, provide dorms for them, food, books, pocket money.

- Knock on the parent's doors in towns, villages, farms, where they keep their children away from school. Find out from them why, analyze their situation case by case, help them optimize, the goal is to school their kids at least until High school, either in a school or at home.

- Teach students the problems facing Morocco, and build in them a keen interest in contributing to solve these problems. Don't hide truths in prefab college books designed to limit the spectrum of truth.

- Encourage students to do research, to be original, to interact with society through surveys and questionnaires.

- Review the law so that aggressive parents and teachers are disciplined.

amcheli, you had a very good point about the need to keep students in schools even if they fail to pass some classes. I personnaly think that the teachers and professors need to be inspected and reviewed more vigorousely. Some teachers are killers! so vicious, they go as far as testing students during the exams with problems that were probably not well elaborated in class. Exams and quizzes are supposed to gauge students understanding of the professor's teaching. If the students fail, this should be a SIGNAL to the director of the school that the teacher is not qualified.

In addiiton, I think that Moroccan education system is in desperate need for art education in schools. This is lacking big time! Art helps students interact not only with each other and their teachers in an informal and fun way, but it helps them learn about themselves, their creativity, originality and improve their mathematical skills.

I would simply say that the education system in Morocco is not completely bad especially when talking about what is being thought to pupils and students when comparing it with other countries around the world, Moroccan recieve a huge amount of information in numerous subjects when in other countries e.g. the EU student receive only little.. However the problems that Moroccan students are faced with is the lack of high standard quality of delivering information, as it is most of the time tend to be dry if you see what I am pointing out. Furthermore, some regulations have to be implemented by the Ministry of Education and Teaching, such as making students to repeat the year and get kicked out of school if he/she fails when undertaking the second attempt.

This can be changed for instance to letting students to proceed to the next stage but to class B instead of class A after being assessed by a special board. This would prevent kids leaving school at such a young age etc...

As it is known internationally, in every school you will find student with behaviour difficulties (ADHD), or they are suffering from Dyslexia, these are classed as diseases but unfortunatly the Moroccan pupil or student is treated as being a slow and thick person and later on find themselves out of school.
