Effective Speaking in Morocco
12:00:00 AM Wednesday Apr 14, 2004

Most of us, if not all, speak more than we read. Speaking is essential to conveying who we are, negotiating what we want, and can affect others around us. What is most interesting is how we speak. Words are important and how these words are uttered and put together decides if your speech is eloquent or mediocre. That ultimately defines your authority, reputation and status. In America, effective communication is conveyed over Standard English as opposed to nonstandard English. People who learn how and when to use Standard english have better academic achievement and better employment opportunities. One might use nonstandard English depending on the situation, rather than default to it for your lack of better language. Reading, hanging around people who speak better than you, listening to radio and television programs that use standard English will improve your ability to speak effectively.

That is in America.

Now if you may pan your eyesight towards Morocco. In Morocco, there is no single official language to fall back on since people find themselves surrounded by French, classical Arabic, Berber languages, and many dialects of Moroccan. What is considered effective speaking? and if a language is a parameter, what language or dialect is a proven standard in Morocco? Are there any factors you think play into effective speaking in Morocco more than other cultures?

Some questions I had in mind when I started this discussion:

Is there a strong relationship between effective language and development? - I believe yes there is. Effective language is more powerful than dialect because it is stable, can be written, archived, and communicated across time and space. It is far more rich than dialect in terms of expressiveness and articulateness. Although a dialect can be highly expressif as well, but it may not be comprehended by many.

What is the impact on society deveopment IF there are multiple distinct languages? (example: Morocco) - I believe there is an impact to start with. The leadership will find itself spending efforts, energy and resources trying to communicate itself in many languages. The good thing, more people get exposed to important elements of news and affairs. The downside, resources and time are spent on such broadcast effort, when things could be moving on different directions faster.

What is the impact on society development IF there is ONE effective language but several slight variations of this language? (example: USA, Israel, Germany, France) - I believe developement in such countries is on a fast pace. It is not a problem anymore to establish a unified language, tool of communication, anymore. That burden is not existent. So the focus is on moving on, on progress.

Finally, I believe, in the case of Morocco, internal cultures should not try to impose their regional language on all society or all broadcast media. If they are concerned about preserving their culture and language they have all the time in the world to thrive that at their home. They should encourage their generations to go ahead and learn the ONE language of the country and move on. Learn your ancestor language in the backyard, maintain it, preserve it, be proud of it, exhibit it as a personal asset, but be realistic and go with what works.

But unless, there is a strong relationship between the language and society development, we cannot go ahead and try to select a one language fits all. If it is not already given (like in USA, France..) is it wise to enforce it in cultures that speak 1001 languages?

on est des berbers arabise avec une culture musulmane/juive/ fran?aise/espagnole....

11:31 am    April 19, 2004
I believe that our Cultur is rich in term of langauges and dialects but i have noticed that in the last years every region of our country is trying to impose its dialect or langauge, even in some region people will descriminate you if you don`t understand the regional dialect.

I personally respect all the dialects or langauges but when it comes to the academic level and the professional life no arabic, no tachlhit, no tarifit, none of those will give a chance to communicate with back to reality in Morocco we wrote CV`s in french to apply for a job, so culturally we still following the French/spanish Crown and very soon the American one.

I was just wondering what are we french, spanish, arabian, Berber........who got the answer?

as i grew up, and since i speak both tashel7it and moroccan dialect i realized one reason of the complexity of our slang.
we speak arabic using berber sentence structure and terms!
example: ja me3ak serewal
transl arabic: ja2a ma3aka ssirwalo!!
berber stence: youshkad(ja2a) dik(ma3aka) serwal!

another example : al3afia in berber its fire while in arabic it is good health! allah i3tik le3afiya ya akha le3arab:)

lemosh = in berber it is called: amasho, while in arabic it is 9it or hir!!

ssaroute = en berbere c tasssaroute = en arabe : almifta7:))

iwa layefete7 3elina....

TEST: translate : Zeyyer Te3ich Mekheyyer:)

SSmellah bi rahmatik, ya fettah ya rezzaq, 3ain Lhassoud la tassoud, Lmektoub ma mennou Hroub, wtemshi ghir fin meshak moulana, Ama ba3d ....

Morocco's language is largely influenced if not based on rural (agricultural) and religious life style and culture ....Li 3ta-LAH* wSOU9* , howa hada!

Even when foreign terms are adapted to the moroccan dialect, they still do still reflect a rural aspect :
expl: Pile dial haJra (note Pile = battery in french, Hajra is supposed to mean battery in Moroccan... yet, Pill dial hajra is supposed to mean "Lampe dial batterie" ! Ewa TiR nta !

"Frana 3lih btomobil, hta drab rassou m3a LGuidoun !" :)

When it comes to intellectual topics that are far from religion , the matter gets worse...I find myself lacking terms and vocabulary to express my ideas in Moroccan dialect without injecting imported words... and I suppose most of you do have the same problem.

A European language speaking person does not need to think in a foreign language as to study Maths, physics, Mechanics or Astronomy... A Moroccan needs to think in French as to send a phone text message, an email, or even switch on the "Parabol".

Science and technology has become part of our daily lives, and since our native language(s) are not able to keep up with the fast changes, learning a European language has become a must, as to even manipulate a technical device, let alone to study it...

That's when you have use their "Copy written" terms to express your ideas...In a way it is like a conversion.... Just like a new converted Muslim, he/she has to learn Arabic as to learn new expressions and ideas typical to Islam, we have to learn a European language as to learn ideas typical to the modern and scientific world .

Ewa Rebbi ghaleb ! (mazelna dawin 3lih... :)

Diversity is the effective language in Morocco.

Baghi Tiqar
In Morocco, i would categorize our dialect is one of the fast growing dialects similar to the slang of the US (i mean the southsiders...Snoop Dog and Rappers or south of Chicago) the dialect witnesses a very quick evolution in terms of coining new words. See for instance our slang in Casablanca or Rabat how creative is? let alone creativity of jokes!!!
The standard arabic language thou is an academic language that could not culminate to the surface and stay on the top. It couldn't work as administrative or business luanguage coz of our attachment to french. In the meantime french is enforced to be predominant as the classy language of the rich and elite society, i recall even some ministers would express themselves better in french in the media rather than in arabic.
In Morocco we try harder to be in the same level as other European nations (etre toujours en vogue), the access of foreign programs, music, apparels,TV and media affected our life immensely and made our youth very keen in creating and elaborating phrases, compound words and idiomatic expressions. We are keeping up with the outward world!
I would say we are a lost nation in the chaos of globalization and openness and "paraboles"!!! But i believe it's not bad for us it's a healthy direction. We are very proud of having a large majority who speak more than 2 languages!!! compare us with other nations! Morocco is a melting pot and an amalgam of languages and ethnicities. We can understand any middle-eatsern slang but they could not understand us. We can speak and infiltrate in other societies very quickly.Intergration make our people very successful and good communicators.
Berbers, moorish, notherners and saharan southerners who speak spanish fluently (Tetuan, tangier, Laayun, Smara etc.), the metropolitan Casa, Rabat and Marrackesh where french is widespread and other additional languages, Agadir (Berber, french and german) ----because of tourism most of the youth speak more than 2 or 3 languages!
Dialects are not phased out but still alive and developing scripts and the Gov. established institutes and media channels for (Berber) which is great!
I remember when I first came to the US I was using all what I learned in my University, a very standard english with a mix of british and american and people would look at me as if i came from another planet, I sounded very formal than what i should be. Regular people of course in US stick to the informal slang while business people and intellegentia prefer a language maintained and polished (like media or newspaper jargon)!
I think we have to be very versatile and ready to converse depending on the situation and the people we speak to.
We have to maintain a core language which is our arabic and then go from there, explore other languages, it makes us able to understand other nations, cultures and communicate properly.
Media especially written one (Newspapers) contribute to our accessibility to a wide range of expressions, formal language and elaborate our reserve of words. One though should be very selective of his words, language as it reflect the personality of the person.
