Moroccans' Hospitality
12:00:00 AM Friday Feb 28, 2003

Yes we're all proud of it! These North African species know how to care of their guests. Their delicious unique medditerreanean cousine helps also. Mint tea, a myriad of types of cookies, dry, honeyied, sweet, spicy, sticky, chocolatey, crispy, soft.. anything you want, you got it in Morocco!

So how did Moroccans developped this hospitality level 109 ?

On the other hand do you think the new Moroccan generations are losing this quality ? if yes, why ?

Issami,

I have American friends laya3ammarha dar (America needs more of them, and our societies need more of them). They are very very hospitable, treat their guests with most respect, best food, best words, best corner in the house to sleep.

Also, where I come from we love our guests and treat them with the best we have whether they are farmers, khammass, Algerian, Libian, American or Jewish.

So, speak for yourself next time you make such observation about behaviour. Behaviour is very subjective after all.

Arabi,
Mar7ba bik a khoya 3andi f Addar whenever you decide to come to Minneapolis. What I meant by my previous words is the fact that we, as arabs, give lot of importance to foreign people (Especially when they are from Europe or USA), and we seem to spoil them more than we should. Most of the time they do misunderstand that, and take it as a sign of weakness and naivity and not hospitality! This hospitality is due to a gene that all the arabs have in their chromosomic map. So, in my case, I am only nice to my guests if they are nice to me, or if they are from my cultural background, cuz those are the only poeple who appreciate hospitality, where western world do not understand that word. So it will be useless to be hospitable to someone who does not understand the behavior.

Mr. Almoudir
I really do appreciate the time and efforts you put into this website.Whether you own the website or not doesn't matter to me and i dIDN'T REALLY MEAN IT when i said that you may step down . What matters most is that this site keeps going on and it won't survive without constructive and meaningful criticism from everyone. I may not like what you do or say and vice versa .We may agree or disagree but our goal is always the same ; to express our MOROCCANISM in the best way .Any way thanks for taking time to explain the meaning behind your choice of the illustration. We won't go back to that topic again .Concerning the next topic why don't we iniotiate a discussion about that here instead of talking about it behind the scene. That will give us a chance to shed light on some issues that need prior attention. Thank you

Hospitality, an important Factor in Morocco.

Must we disagree on everything there is! How is a character from star wars an offensive illustration to the Moroccan hospitality? Why so much drama?
Lighten up and open your mind, considering that the picture isn?t even the subject of the discussion.
Furthermore, I believe that this is Adnnane?s house and we all are simply guests. We shouldn?t/couldn?t ask him to redecorate his house according to our taste. In fact, as a typical Moroccan host, Adnnane is being more than a gentleman yet some, like typical Moroccan guests, are full of critics ever since they enter a house. Hospitality is a good quality, which we should seek that our kids get to learn as well. Hospitality is about loving people and making them feel grand and appreciated in your home. Many westerners, at least at a certain time, were just baffled when exposed to our hospitality at home. For that very reason, many westerners decided to relocate and live in a country with such a beautiful characteristic.
Lastly, why would we visit anyone, who doesn?t treat us well in his/her house? I certainly don?t want to be a guest at Issami?s palace.

Peace N Love

zino zino from rhode island, I cannot step down unfortunately because I own this web site (refer to Amine's thoughtful message). I know apparently that some people expressed their interpretation of the illustration as unwelcoming, some did in a nice way, others did in a je-m-en-foutist way: drop a bomb and don't care about the effort of the web site team to keep raioo going and changing topics. I have no problem with people who critisize raioo in a polite and understanding way, I usually respond to those.

The illustration is initialy an ad for milk. The "Got Milk?" series of ads. Portrayed is Yoda, a character in the Star Wars movies. The english text was translated to some moroccan words and since Yoda usually wears a Jellaba-like clothes I entertained myself by decorating him with a 3mama. How it relates to hospitality ? the only link is milk. If you're still stressing yourself about it, I recommend u go drink a lot of milk so you can calm down and sleep well tonight. Milk contains a substance called melatonin that helps you relax.

Salam,
Al-moudir.

Issami, what does hospitality has to do with economical/technical developement?
I don't think we should get rid of this value: it 's been there since ages, before islam even come, and it's one of our tradition that we must be proud of!!!
i don't think that being developped while forgetting the human values is good for any human civilisation.European have started to understand that and now they want conviviality and hospitality to come back.
So please don't mix everything, we can find our own way to modernity without forgettin our SOULS!

Hospitality is not a good thing, otherwise we should have been the world leader just like America if Hospitality was a good thing. In the opposite, I think that we, arabs, still living on the shaddow of the old past. We need to wake up, or at least stop giving us sleeping pills. This whole scene of hospiatality and arabs are hospitable or whatever needs to stop, cuz We arabs or Moroccan, mataffarenahche avec notre hospitality alors peut etre il faut penser a autres voies comme how to launch our own stellite without beeing hospitable. I think that being not hospitable but highTech is much better than beeing hospitable and Moroccan:) And I also think that Hospitality originated from a kind of weakness and other things athat I can not find the worlds to describe.
those are my thoughts.

Mr. Almoudir
I think you are wrong .We are NOT concerned about the illustration as much as you think .We are concerned about the core of the discussion.A certain illustration alone can tell a whole lot more about a topic than we can all say.Your illustration or picture as some may say was just a redicule of Moroccan hospitality .Can you explain to me the significance of that illustration ?.You may look at it as an "ARTIST" and you might just have created (in your own mind) some kind of connection between the illustration and the topic which i can't see at all.
The bottom line is that we are all concerned about things that concern us . This is a podium of expression and i may say what i want as anybody else . Don't go that far to say we are chasing our own tail.I don't wanna get into that because i will sound just nasty . People are not happy with your illustration .That's all .If you are not going to listen to them and respect their opinions step down then and HANNINA.

Thanks Amine,

I'm glad you shed light on the essence of the topic with a creative approach.

As for those of you who are trapped in the illustration and chasing your own tail, you will have to wait until the next topic, or I'd say, the next illustration if that is most what you concern yourselves with.

Hospitality goes along the same lines of generosity. Being hospitable means making sacrifices, for hospitality and kissing up refer to different things altogether.

To people of old, hospitality was not only a matter of pride but also a matter of religion. Stories abound of the man who sacrificed his only lamb to feed guests he had found lost in the desert. Also, the stories of the man who dimmed the lights at dinner so his guest does not see him not eating but leaving him all the food.

Hospitality makes a huge leap in this age of internet. The host of this web site is clearly sacrificing time and money so people come together and enjoy conversations, arguments, insults, invitations, holiday congratulations, INS information, music, videos, and the list goes longer than this box.

So, everyone: wherever you are, be a good guest, for in Islam the host is rewarded for his generosity, and the guest for his appreciation.

Take care, and a big thank you to the overseer of this site.

Let s start and suggest the role of morrocan association around the world in developing our country, begining how much we owe to our Morocco and how much morocco destroys his people,... these subjects are well placed to discuss being from there and oneday we will be going , visiting or living there, a reality has to be raised and ideas for self develpment will encourage and increase the benefit!

Long life to our hospitality! i think it is one of our great assets and we should stick to it.Me myself i can not get rid of these traditions even if i live abroad, so people come out from my house with their stomach down to earth after a 'simple' morrocan dinner(i do not even try to cook all th dishes like i used to do in morroco:))
Bottom line is that i am often disappointed when i am invited: it is often for a spaghetti rather than a mechoui!

adnane, wal lmoudir kima taigoulou lik:) anyhow, I have to jnoi the conversation and say somthing about the moroccan hospitality. Indeeed, as any human kind, love and like the foreign people and foreign things have been existed and will not disappear... Here, just because , it s very materialistic world and most americans did not leave their States for overseas, they dont know how people treat each other, they dont know even how to treat themselves,... they work for cars, houses and ...u know the complete words!!! so for Issami, the fact that ur american friend got too much attention just because he has blonde hair, he speaks an other language , take an algerian or tunisian with u I m postive that he will not as much as u get!!! color, language and country does play a significative role in the modern hospitality. At the same time, in our old roots, our parents and grand parents roots, the hospitality was an obligatory, is a a principle of our culture that saddly seeing it going by the materilaistics interests!!!
Fill up ur hearts and ur minds with " ALKANAA" as Le prohhet SALA ALAH AALIH WASALAM said.

Folks, did anyone had the chance to watch the arab summit meeting. It's so funny, you should see that harsh converstaion between kaddafi and prince heritier de saoudiya. They were exchanging insults, and talking about how they become leaders.. I just knew something now, I think that our leaders think that they are elected, because that guy from saudia arabia(prince) told kaddafi, look at yourself, how did you become a leader to talk about democracy, like if himself was elected... As for the Moroccan hospitality, it is beyond question that the Moroccan poeple do ENJOY treating their guests well, even if it costs them more than what they can normally afford...
Just the traditional gesture of bringing the water to the guest to wash his hands, tells enough...
It is trully an extraordinary tradition if you think about it !

While in the prosperous west, sometimes poeple take their own food or drinks as to join a barbeque party...:)
(mental hunger!)

Hospitality is one of the Greatest values Morocco is blessed with, I hope it will never fade away...
