Lemchaheb Legacy
08:00:47 PM Friday Jun 16, 2006

Ya 7assrah 3la la musique dyel Nafss (Soul) fel Maghreb.. Mabqat mthal Jil Jilala, nass Ghiwane wlem'Chaheb.

the Temptations, The Supremes, The Drifters, they all offered the world the true meaning of Soul, teamwork, art and perseverance, before everything changed today to capitalists, American idol and cyborg artists enhanced by electronic tweeks. Today I feel nostalgic. Today I feel sorry that we're losing the soul and heart that drove music production, innovation and art throughout the seventies and eighties in Morocco and Algeria.

I feel compassionate with bands of high caliber like Jila jilala, Nass Ghiwane, Lajwad, and Lemchaheb!

Yes, lemchaheb wa ma adraka ma Lemchahab. Les Flames. The Flames. Fueled by Algerian and Tunisian maqamat and the eagerness to provide an alternative to brotherhood-associated bands, they enriched the artform in Morocco, and along the way gave the Moroccan woman a lift in spirit by enjoining a young 14 years old Saida Birouk to their Mejmer. The least we can do now is remember them. The least we can offer them is reconciliation. The least we can give them is our interest and our ears. They were true musicians, bosses of their visions and leaders of Maghrebi style infused with the influences of the time from Funk, to soul, to jazz, to blues, to folk, swirling it all, and bringing it back home with Mel7oun and chaabi to produce this sizzling pop music of Maghreb that would have swept teenagers and adults alike off their feet, and gave them dynamos to get through the politico-social life of North Africa.

Mr. Bakhti is the manager of the group made up of Mr. Sousdi Mohamed, Hamadi Mohamed, Mr. Lamrani Moulay Ch?rif, Batma Mohamed and his wife Saida, Mr. Chadili Moubarek. Many artists were influenced by Lemchaheb, their beautiful bluegrass mandolin tunes of Monsieux Lamrani Chrif, the amazing harmonical and technical pillar of the band. Hamid Baroudi interpreted several of their songs: hakmet Laqdar, ya Lili.. others picked up on their style and attempted to sustain thir flame, but at the end, none can light up as The Flames did. Here is a more detailed history of Lemchaheb from an apparently loyal fan.

Please watch these videos, and remember Lemchaheb. Research them, learn about them, talk about them, visit those who are still alive, and share with us your findings and experiences. We LOVE YOU Lemchaheb!

"w mal lqandil 'al dwam tafi,
w mal sbahna chamsou 'awafi

But, doesn't Lemshaheb mean Meteorites ? (Shihab in classical Arabic)
I have some vague memory that one of their album's cover had the picture of 5 falling meteorites, each one of them was representing the head of one of the band's members...I could be wrong .
Ah 3lek a yamat Sechoir, "Lois" palma 36 wtelfaza blanc et noir ...
I used to visit a friend of mine, and the guy in the middle (bellow) was wel derbhom . I saw him a couple of times walking out with magic genber .

excellent point. it does seem the zawiyat of the sufi brotherhoods were not as widespread in dzayer as in maghrib and tounis at that time, because jam3iyat al3oulamaa and the vast majority of the muslim pro-independence revolutionaries in dz were struggling hard for many years against various sufi sects that had frequently allied with the french colonial powers. the more rural, isolated places where zawiyas had more severe influence were not necessarily very rich in musical/poetic/andaloussi traditions. remember also that the sufi practices and traditions of the rural towns was not always the same as that of algiers and the big cities to the north - the influence of the zawiyas is often a very local/regional phenomena.
*but* I think it wasn't always so b&w. for example, the region of constantine in eastern dz has long been home to a large well-established sufi community, and they have a rich history of arts and musical talent, _and_ they were strongly opposed to the french colonial forces. if i remember correctly it took the french at least 4 attempts to capture the fortified city, and when they finally entered many people jumped into the gorge, preferring death over occupation. so the music of the region must have had great inspiration not only from their faith but also their enormous repertoire of collective experience..
ah.. so much to dig up on this subject..

Tasnime in classical Arabic means a high/raised position (hence the camel's hump is called 'saname'). Tasnime is also a raised well in Heaven that was mentioned in sourate Al Moutafifine...

Remember that bands in Morocco at that time stemmed out of brotherhood lifestyle (zawiya). I don't know how widespread was the brotherhood lifestyle in Algeria. If zawyatt weren't very common there that could be a factor.

i don't know enough about them, but it seems in dzayer back then (and maybe until now to a certain extent) it was more about individual artists than "bands". you had a handful of really stellar artists that would grow very popular and develop strong followings and their admirers of the young generation would learn from them and try to adopt their styles. i grew up knowing more the classic names of chaabi which i love very much. you can find some info on chaabi dialna if you're curious. my mom used to sing these amazing berber songs sometimes when i was little, but she would never really talk about them, who were the artists or what the songs meant. from what i gathered they were usually something about elghorba, mother-daughter-leaving, sad songs really, but very beautiful. that's an area i really need to dig into more and discover..

Yes those were good times. I wish I could go back in time. I need to find out more about Ikhwane Migri, and Lejwad (the documentary briefly showed one of their posters). Any Algerian bands like these?

i have a soft spot for the classics.. you can really hear the poetic elements and stories told here.. nowadays music has often lost that poetic touch, it's become so clich?, and the instruments often clash with the singers, creating a cacophonous raucous noise.. if you listen to lemchaheb and other classics from across the arab and north african world, and other greats like oum keltoum, you notice the instruments complement, not compete, the music enhances the poetry and enriches the tale with emotion and beauty. but the singer and the story take center stage.
*that* was art..
