This is an attempted response to Kathleen's recent blog about Biyouna. There was a beautiful song in the algerian film Viva Laldj?rie (2004) where Biyouna acted as a depressed widow mom living with her adventurous daughter. Besides watching this excellent movie, Listen to this song Matejebdoulich by Djenet. It's one of my favorite RAI songs. I think Kathleen was looking for another song, the one Biyouna sang at the end of the film at the cabaret opening. I loved that song too and I hope to find it. I am pretty sure though that it's Biyouna's own song or interpretation of an older song. Treasure hunt starts!
"Matejebdoulich" means, don't bring him up in discussion.. it's about past lovers whose memories makes us feel unsettled when we reminisce about them or someone mentions them. Some people can easily forget and what a blessing. Others don't forget very easily. When it comes to romance the latter bunch suffer a little more.
