date deals
12:13:46 PM Tuesday Jan 3, 2006

This needs to be dealt with once and for all. I have been looking on the net all day for the hijri date in Morocco so that I can plan my trip for Eid. No where, on any newspaper website does it specify the hijri date. I came accross this page, while desparate for any clues, that talks about who started the hijri calendar and the various calendars that existed before it.

These are the questions it raised in my mind:
1- if Omar was the one who chose the type of calendar we have now (lacking 11 days in comparison to the Julian calendar), hwat consequence did that have on ramadan and other calendar based events?

2- I thought the hijri calendar was started before the death of the prophet. So, before his death, how did people recognize the months?

3- Where do the names come from (Ramadan, Safar, Muharram, sha3ban, etc?

Check out this article, and please include others that might help.

According to moonsighting.com Eid lekbir for USA is on wednesday 11, Jan.

That gives you ample time to socialize with the ram...

and here are some methods how some countries determine start of months.

Called my sister in Oujda. She says it's on ednesday. Too late. Already bought the ticket for Saturday departure. We'll be hanging there for a few days before Eid. Not a bad deal at all.

Morocco seems to be on a different lunar path than most countries. I would not be surprised if eid is actually Monday or tuesday here in the US.

this is one of those things where word of mouth is actually more reliable, i guess.. call one of the khaliji embassies/consulates and ask them when is youwm 3arafah gonna be. i myself saw the crescent last night, kinda seemed high up there, but i am still waiting to hear official word from makkah so i can plan my time off. i tried making some calls but can't seem to get through. maybe you'll have better luck than me, it's been one of those mornings when everything slams hard all at once and i don't have the patience to keep re-dialing..
