Another great poem from Imam Shafi3i. He was known for using common Arabic language that everyone (well most..) can understand. I hope you like this poem as much as I did, and feel free to express yourself about it, and help translate it to as many languages as we can. Have fun!

Thanks a lot Adnane for taking the time to beautifully handwrite this piece of art. I grow up listening to Arabic chi3r from my parents and this reminds so well of those days?

"Addahro" is implicitly fate, it's "azzamano" refering to time in arabic but it entails a negative meaning here of "assabatka mossibaton" = naba bika eddahro = "naba" is the verb and derived from it "nabia" which means "mossiba".
in the last lines we come up to human behavior, especially referring to people who change like "al-Hirba" diffrent behaviors to diff. situations or people who cannot stick to thier principles, they have this nature of changing according to their moods or desires or goals. The poet says "beware of this type of personalities". The last one is a really good one that we can sum up in this proverb :"Assadiko wakto eshidda", which refers to true friends are the real friends who are to support you when you need them or when you are down!! not the ones who are there for nothing.
There's a lot of so-called friends who are with you all the time but when in you are really in bad shape morally or physically...You don't find them there for you...consequently, they are not the true friends the are just looking for their pragmatic goals...i hope i have explained that right for you..thx

first line:

protect the soul and let its carriage be what beautifies it
you will live safe and people will say good things about you

(the poet is inviting us to let our soul only be preoccupied with what will render it more beautiful yuzinuha mina zzine)

second line:
do not give authority to people except out of flattery (courtesy)
in the hardships of time or when a companion (lover) abandons you

(no matter how hard it becomes do not bestow authority on people depending on them except for what the social etiquette requires)

What does the first verse mean please when the poet says: '..wa7milha 3ala ma yazinouha'

Also, second verse, what does he mean when he says:

'wa la touliyanna nnassa illa tajamoulan
naba bika dahroun aw jafaka khalilou'

The only meaning I understoof was the end of the verse but since I didn't understand the wntire verse I cannot say I understand it in this context. If I'm not mistaken, jafaka khalilou means a friend left you? a lover broke up with you?

Maverick showed up again with some baseless critics and no argumentation at all. It strikes me to see you again here reporting your anger and rebellious tendancy against everything without even backing up yourself with any solid arguments or justifying your points...Very pointless and reflects your obsessive compulsive appeal for a hollow criticism that does not offer any alternative. I would suggest that u have to see a shrink...I am just kidding...Dude you have to revise your ideas and give justifications and alternative before uttering a word! That's my advice to you.
I think every culture has a treasure of literary writings and poetry..it reflects the image of society back then, how people think, live, and the ethics of societies.and I believe that "Al-moaallakat a sabbaa" are great poems! If you look thoroughly in poetry in our culture it draws different eras of society (Al-abbaseein, Al Omayeen) and an amalgam of subjets such as: love, wisdom, Al-hijaa, even taboo, racism, jokes and obsenity (Zandaka)...Isn't that a treasure that draws a mosaic-image of our history. I heard that without the love of poetry and learning it by heart we could have never gotten the Koran verses preserved safely and intact without any mistake, changes or modification.
This reflected the ability of this people to learn by heart several poems. On the other hand there were people who suspected the ability of the poets' memory and stated that there were a lot of modifications, plagiarism and mistakes in this poetry which indoctrinated to some researchers that some of what we have undergone some changes (grammatical, style and ryhme) I would state in this regard Dr. Taha Hussein who triggered this belief to an extent that he allegedly said:"Give me a red pen to correct the Koran" based on his suspicious theory of righteousness of the poets which made a hell of a contreversy in the arab world, then he apologized for this bobo in his book "Fi Aljahilia" which reflected his vision and his views!!
Poetry is a very interesting literary material and I would say to sum up that if you like music/songs you definetly like poetry to some extent ---it's lyrics usually are poems or poems-like pieces derived from poetry style, selected words and structure or format.
Maverick, don't you like music/songs? Um Kalthoum?...does it ring the bell to you?
Thanks.

Have you ever listened to your mother sing some traditional song while cooking a tajine or making bread? If yes, sure the poetry she was singing wasn't what produced the lunch you ate so happily. I'll let you tell me why you mother sang that beautiful poetic song.

Back where I grew up, I hear my mom singing gharnati poetry while making lunch, her hands are busy yet her mind seems so relaxed and steady as she tells the lyrics. I also remember a Figuigui tradition where women gather together in a house and make couscous from scratch. They sit in a circle in a room and each woman has a function. Their hands are manufacturing what will become at the end of the day couscous grains, while they sing as a group traditional figuigui poetry. Why? one thing for sure is to keep the tradition alive, second, to keep the Figuigui language alive, third to synchronize themselves and feel they're one group.

Poetry is human, what is your argument that enjoying and discussing poetry is a waste of time? and if you so insist, what alternatives are you proposing?

Dude, what's wrong with you? If you are sick and tired, don't participate in this site. If you don't like it, mooooove. Why do you guys complicate things? Adnane posted poetry in the frontpage of raioo. Where is the problem? We are going to start comparing poetry to going to the moon?

You guys love critizing just for the sake of it. Go get a life man. Poetry is not for you anyways.

Scientists and poets share many similarities, the most striking of which is imagination, craft, and excellent communication skills. Many scientists throughout history were also poets, and many poets were inspired by science.

Poetry helps you develop languistic skills since your childhood. A society with a good grasp on language can communicate better its ideas internally and with the external world. Hence, such a society can advance quicker in many areas, science included.

Poetry is a test of your ability to summarize, to extract wisdom in succinct verses; it is a craft.

I also invite you to read this article: Science and poetry

And here is another narrative that suggests poetry is essential to understanding the real world. Many people think that science is the only way to explain the physical world, and to reach materialistic succss. Little do they know that they are confusing the physical world with the Real world. Poetry gives meaning to the real world. I personnaly think that poetry (and art) is to our success what spices are to a Tajine.

Thx Adnane for putting this beautiful poetry from a respected scholar and poet and not a psycho. First of all, only in underdeveloped countries, we find thsi separation between useful concret (buildings, jobs, lhabba...) and the useless (poetry, philosophy...). This poem is about nafs and if one does not have a balanced soul how can he/she construct anything? (wa fi anfusikum afala tubsiruuun?)
If Poetry is that useless, why did the Moroccan Makhzen arrest Abdellatif Laabi (hey Adnane please put once some lines from his poetry) for many years? why did they close the department of philosophy in Morocco?

How about you read the third verse of the poem and see if you can feel any better about jobs and employment situation.

And by coincidence, I just finished the first version of a new section about job postings and will open it soon. It replaces the temporary discussion Job Opportunities under Business

One more observation, you need to relax a little bit. A lot of things happen to all of us at the same time, but we learn to do things in parallel. If we're stressed, depressed, beaten, we need to keep our sense of humour, or extract wisdom from poetry, or guidance from a spiritual discussion, or simply calm our errupting senses by offering them a look at a piece of art, or a listening of a music piece.

A famous musician, I forgot his name once said: "On a besoin d'art pour ne pas mourir de verite."

At raioo, this is what we do. We diversify.
