Open War in the Middle East?
01:37:27 PM Friday Jul 14, 2006

Recent Zidane's headbutt into Materazzi as a result of exchange of words made international headlines, yet now looks futile in comparision to the recent exchange of disproportional violence between Israel and Lebanon's Hizbollah.

What is your perspective on the issue?

There is no escaping the reality of war in Lebanon and Palestine. A war that has sliced a good chunck of the powerful Arab states from the cause of freeing occupied lands; I make direct reference to S. Arabia, Egypt, and Syria (by virtue of its inaction). How depressing it is to realize that arabs have finally been put in their place. An impotent, weak, and aimless people when viewed in relation to what they have always claimed to be.

As to the hadith, perhaps my feelings are clouded by the miderable situation in Lebanon and Palestine, but I believe that the prediction has already occured. Perhaps the hadith was referring to the arabs as a powerful state in control of its destiny. That, alas, is a long been-dead state.

Nobody like war, everyone want to live in peace. But there's a great difference between living in peace without dignity, and a life full of pride.
If war and resistance is the only way to bring a certain amount of dignity to the muslim and arabic war, la mafarro.
It was said centuries ago, in hadith, kitab al fitan (sahih boukhari wa moslim), that there will wars between muslims and jews. We just have to be prapared for that.

Well, first I apologize for this late reply to all of the comments and questions asked. I also apologize for the tone, that of a powerless and frustrated muslim. My frustrated is in no shape of form to be directed towards any of the participants in this discussion, for that please accept my apologies again. That being said let me elaborate more on some of the issues I was stressing out earlier.

Yes I said and repeated things, however, I chose a different angle everytime. Kind of helping someone see an object in a distance while moving him/her around creating different angles to avoid the obstacles in the way. It helps.

Anyway, the questions you asked are very valid but I never tackled those issues because I was trying to wright something that Hudhud had mentioned before about Hizboulah. Do I admire Hizboulah for being a resistance movement, sure I do. Do I think that they miscalculated and they may not be able withstand Israel powerful army- may be, depeding on whether life is worth living under humiliation.

Now I Responded to comments about Hizboulah that was labeled a terrorist group by the "world" because it is simply not true as I explained the reasons below in my previous comments. It was always the case with a reistance movements.

Now going back to your questions, I don't know the answers to those questions. However, sometimes we cannot understand how things are done when we try to disect the issue inside out. I suggest we look out this situation from the outside going in that is considering this whole mess as Black Box with Inputs and Outputs. Then, we can use all of the combinations of Inputs with their corresponding Outputs to decypher the algoythm or strategy being used here.

Now to your surprise, I am sure :) ... I will compile a interesting list of such combinations, let's call it "The Truth Table". Some of you with computer science background may be familiar the term. Please don't laugh for using these computer terms, I am not as geeky as this sounds. It works though. Right now I am on vacation and under severe jet lag brain damage so I will go back to bed for a little while and continue this a little later starting the Truth Table. Note: Once you see the format, it would be nice to enter some of your idea into the list so that we can have a more rounded set of information to guide us towards decyphering this strategy.

with all due respect to you all.

The calculation might be miscalculated.. or maybe not.

Could this have been instigated mainly by Tehran? after all, Tehran has a deadline of August to respond back about its plans for dealing with the Nuclear issue. Maybe Tehran wants to win some time? maybe it wants to create more heat in the middle east, thus, give itself more justification why it has the right to defend itself in the future, just like Israel has the right to defend itself?

I can't justify it other than to say that I don't believe their approach is making matters any better. I concede that they seem to be doing more to defend their soil and people than the lebanese army, which pathetically stands back and watches their own people getting massacred - but still I must say I wish that hizbollah could have taken the few relatively calm moments that pop up like weeds every now and then, not to try getting at Israel through armed means or kidnapped soldiers-- but to take advantage of every possible moment to further strengthen and help their own people and improve conditions in their region. They are not prepared or capable to win such a large-scale military endeavor right now the way things stand- that's why I think they should hold back and take better care of themselves in the meantime. Look at their futile attempts with the rockets they fire - have they shaken off the Israeli forces? Will they be able to win this conflict now that they've further quagmired themselves and put their people at greater risk and harm? and all this for what, to try to secure the release of their countless prisoners held by Israel - which is not going to happen now, but even if it did, they would simply capture another bunch sooner or later and lock them up too. or is it to try to save face and prove that they are indeed freedom fighters who will never give up - even when their cat-and-huge rat games with the Israeli forces seem to make things even worse and attract more vindictive hateful terrible murderous acts which they know Israel has no qualms of unleashing against the innocent??

all this for what, for what?? what did they gain??

I didn't call them illegitimate. I said they are not making things better. They need to re-think their strategy.

(oh but how easy it is for me to talk - I'm not there, am I??)

Hudhud:

Your first paragraph is packed with powerful statements, but little justifications. You say you wouldn't draw parallels between it and the freedom fighters in North Africa; why? You say there is a political agenda behind the group; what is it? Besides, hisbullah is a ligitimate political party in lebanon, that's been voted into government.

The history of hisbulah is one of resitance to Israel's envasion of libanon in the 80's. true, their armed struggles with the Amal movement stain them a little, but the two have reconciled long ago.

Anyway, just curious. I think history will remember hizbullah before it remembers the north african freedom fighters. It is a phenomenon in contemporary arabic and islamic history.

To me it seems that they've given the US a reason to use all means necessary to crush them. Which means emboldening Israel, and paying no regard to civilian human life in Libanon and Palestine, regardless of ethnicity or religion. Is this a calculated bet or a dead cat bounce?

The middle east is the counter-thesis to the need for a UN. The people of the region need to find a better way to coallice for a better future. The Arab League is modeled after the UN, and is totally useless. Iran doesn't border Syria so tough to imagine a fusion of forces. Imagine if Iran controled the Shi3a in Iraq, giving it access to Syria and Libanon. Then you would have the beginning of a critical mass coalition. There is the issue of the kurds to contend with, then there is Turkey and Jordan, which will never jump on board.

So what is the calculation?

Arabie, you want me to look at hizbullah with the same eye as I would look at the north african freedom fighters of our parents' and grandparents' time? I can't do that. Hizbollah may be admired by some of their own supporters, but I must say the situations are very different, and that group has a specific political agenda that prevents me from drawing such parallels..

I don't care for them true, but I also don't care if you and others admire them. Like you said, each one is entitled to his opinion. My point was and remains that they have not saved anyone's life, they have not secured the release of their prisoners, they have not given the population much to hope for.. (not that I'm any bit a savior - what have I done? are my prayers enough? ..)

I tried several times now to get in touch with someone very dear to me, a Lebanese friend and former coworker who is back and forth between here and there all the time. I had no luck. I hope she and her family are safe and sound.. and yes one can't help worrying and feeling a bit anxious. I keep wondering if she will somehow call me back, and say oh I'm here, everyone's here, we're okay.. (will the daydream shatter? hope is a broken wing..)

By pure coincidence, I came across something really strong written by Adonis (Ali Ahmad Said), that I want to share here.. and I feel it echoes some of what Rasta mentioned about certain parties not speaking out against the injustice that is going on.. but I also loved it because it reminds us that sometimes the pen and the word and knowledge are what can grant true victory. I feel that this world is struggling like a bound and gagged and blindfolded prisoner, trying desperately to get free from his chains, but because he can't see, can't hear, and doesn't even know what is going on in his surroundings, he merely causes himself more pain, and a lot of noise as he stumbles about..

"Write-from the Gulf to the Ocean I do not hear a single tongue, I do not read a single word. All I hear is noise. Because of this I see no one throwing fire.

The Word is the lightest of things; and yet, it contains everything. Action is a direction and an instant, and the Word is all directions and all time. The Word - the hand, the hand - the dream:

I discover you O fire, O my capital,
I discover you O poetry,

and I tempt Beirut. She wears me and I wear her. We wander like rays and we ask: who reads, who sees? The Phantoms are for Dayan, and the Oil flows to its destination. God spoke true, and Mao wasn't mistaken: 'Weapons are a very important factor in war, but they are not decisive. Men, not weapons, are the decisive factor,'
and there is no such thing as final victory, nor is there total defeat.

I repeated these proverbs and maxims, as Arabs do, on Wall Street, where rivers of gold of every hue flow, coming from their sources. And I saw among them Arab rivers bearing millions of corpses, victims and offerings to the Great Idol. And between the victims were sailors cackling as they rolled down the Chrysler Building, returning to their sources.

Thus do I light my flame,
we live in a black clamor so that our lungs can be filled with the wind of History,
we rise from black eyes hedged in like graveyards so that we can conquer the eclipse,
we travel in the black head so that we can escort the coming sun."

from his poetry book: A Time Between Ashes and Roses. I wish I could have copied the Arabic text in here, it is so much more powerful than the English translation. anyway, hope we can all learn something from it..

peace, salam..

Arabie,

I thought I had gotten your point; but then you keep posting stuff saying the same things over and over again, and in increasingly hostile tone. Now I lost you.

So without a dissertation on why you're in love with hizbulah, and without contempt towards any of us here (remember, we're just trying to learn from each other), what is the end game? Is it all out war? If it is, do they have a shot? Is there another game being played in the background, and this series of hostilities is just the smoke screen? I mean, the West is going after Iran, so this might be a way to get Israel involved in the armed conflict since the US is so overstretched in the area. Or maybe Iran is planning something in the background. What is Egypt's role? What about Syria? The Syrians seem to me to be a lame duck. They got kicked out of Libanon after being embarassed in front of the whole world in the security counsil last year. Then Israel bombed them twice in the past 2 years and there was absolutely no response from the Syrians. The US bombed their military installations in the Iraqi borders and took several prisoners, and again no response. They offered the mediate with Iraq before the US invasion, and they were given the cold shoulder. Who are the Syrians in this conflict anyway? I venture they are part of the smoke screen, an easy scape goat when the west needs someone to blame in the area. They have no money, no resources, and no capabilities. What sort of threat to they pose?

Do you have any thoughts?

You're entitled to your opinion. However, you should bear in mind that the "WORLD" you're talking about, the one that is blaming Hizbolah, have an huge interest in doing so. Hizbolah is doing nothing more atrocious than what the Isreali army had been doing for a long time. In fact, there is no room for comparison when we look at the war crimes that Israeli army has comitted and still committing.

Hizbolah again killed more Isreali soldiers than civilans. So far Isreal's target were all lebanese civilians and country infrastructure.

I don't understand your position knowing how smart you are. You certainly understand the propaganda of the "WORLD" you're talking about. It is all about demonizing the arab world and muslims to make their killing justified. You know the slogon already "We're killing and destroying the terrorists".

Yeah Hizbolah represents Lebanese and muslim's dignity in this war against Isreal. Hizbolah that you blame and don't like is the only group that was able to battle Isreal and push them out of the lebanese territories.

That is a credit that Hizbolah certainly deserves. Hizbolah is NOT Al-Qaeda. I hope you make a distinction here. Because it is very imperative that you make that distiction to be able to get on board with the realities of the emperialism agenda of some countries and the tools of propaganda they use vs. the resistance movements.

Did you know that the Moroccan and Algerian resistance against the frensh emperialism was reffered to as terrorist groups by the "rest of the world"?!!!!!!!

It's good to look at history, it sometimes reveals the future. You know history repeats itself.

remember what the prophet said "daf3 addarrar awla min jalb enaf3" - preventing harm takes priority over trying to get some gain. I don't think hizbullah could have secured a prisoner exchange and now it's obvious that the world is indeed blaming them. maybe they deserve it (I certainly have no sympathy for that bunch.. screw your brains back on people..)

tsunami, more deaths and violence in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia (again..), Haiti (again..), who else wants to add their country to the list in turmoil??

a wise man once warned us that later in time "yakthourou alharj" .. alharj is senseless violence, killing chaos.. and that's what we are seeing.

I am more on the side of Arabie; although I have seious reservations about hizbullah and Hammas. You don't start a fight with someone who is just itching to pound you if you don't have a game plan or an end game. Do they really think they can puncture through Israel, with its huge arsenal of US and Europe supplied military might? Come on, get real. So, what is the end game? I doubt that this is only about publicity: "oohh, look how bad and savage they are." The world knows that they're savage but has accepted it.

I feel that Syria must be laughing their ass off at this time at the Libanese. I mean, was it not the US and Israel that pushed the Libanese government into sending off the Syrian troops. This is the slap in the face. Where are Egypt and S. Arabia after all the fuss they made about Syrian troops withdrawals last year? They started off by blaming Hizbullah, and now they're saying the response was not proportional, and now they don't know what to do anymore; their masters haven't given them instructions yet.

Sad... Calculations have been made years ago. Now is the execution. Civilians pay the price; but that's a cliche now. We all know that no one cares about arab and muslim civilians, at least the ones unfortunate enough to have some dual citizenship in a country that matters. Bolton, the US guy at the UN said it best: "it is different when Israel kills civilians in self deffence; it's just not the same as when you shower a civilian town in Israel with rockets." The math is absurd but real.

Over 500 people dead in Indonesia after tsunami. Made your donation yet?

Sorry!!! The way I read your comment led me think you blame only Hizbollah for the killing of the 2 children while disregarding hundreds of innocent people on the other side of the fence. However, your argument can be turned around to blame Isreal for those killing as Hizbollah started by targeting the Military personel but Israel retaliation targeted the people, civilians. Normal for Hizbolah to adopt the same strategy as well... don't you think?

Anyway- if not for Hizbolah, southern Lebanon would be still occupied by Isreal. If not for Hamas, there will not even be a Gaza strip or west bank to negotiate with Israel. These groups although not as powerful as Isreal do pose a lot and only weight when negotiating things for their people with their enemy. Also these resitance groups wouldn't even exist if their countries were not violated by let's say Isreal and it's unconditional partner in crime.

These two groups seem to be so bad only because what the media constantly labels them to be and feeds into the populus minds... After all, if you are muslim and young you are simply a terrorist. Kindda like Hizbolah and Hamas. Do you know get that impression in their leaders speaches?

They have tried every single thing to demonize the palestinans, now the lebanese, and the entire arab and muslim world. That is the strategy to justify the crimes they commit against humanity. They have to make them look like monsters so that no one feels bad about the killing of 298 Lebanese but feels really disgusted when 2 children die in Israel. They blame the conflict on the terrorisom by palestinians and lebanese, while the real terrorism is what we're watching on TV, it terrorises me at least when I see these people being bombed and violated.

We have to be careful in knowing the facts and geopolitical aspects of each state or group.

God's Love!

dude I think you completely misunderstood me. my point is that hizbollah are not helping their own people, and that their own weapons and rhetoric are putting their own kind in greater danger. I am very disgusted with them b/c they don't seem to realize how much harm they themselves are also doing. and you're right it's not just this incident, it's their entire history. groups like hizbollah and hamas don't seem to get it - they're not helping their own people. what these people need right now more than anything else is some stability to try to piece their lives back together - not more violence. they're not about to win an armed conflict like this anyway - can't they see that..

What in the world are you two talking about? Hizbollah started this by capturing 2 Israeli soldiers. Let's not be Naive and look at the situation as it truly is. Isreal has hundreds of Lebanese and Palestinians in their jails, why isn't the international community bombing the hell of Isreal to get them back. This scenario of capturing soldier for exchange of prisoners have been going on for years and years. But now the retalliation is to disarm Hisbollah, so how Isreal should do that...yeah by bombing roads, civilians, bridges, see and air ports. Yeah those are Hizbollah's arsenal.
Ok let's say Isreal is a peaceful country and Hizbollah was the agressor, why isn't Isreal targeting Hizbollah directly? Why is Isreal targeting CITIZENs and INFRASTUCTURE?
The context of which these events took place is very important to understand, so we know who "STARTED" this whole mess. I Know people are hurt and the more they hurt, the more questions they will ask 'how did we get to this' and then for some the answer will be Hizbollah and for the rest who know the history of the conflict and current situation in the south, they will blame the countries that own the jet fighters and helicopters.

hudhud....I can't believe you show your disgust at Hizbollah becuz 2 children were hit by a rocket....that is amazing to me. What!!!!!! how 298 lebanese bombed to pieces, is that not inhuman? There are more Isreali soldier casualties than Israeli civilian casualties. I bet you can't say that about the lebanese.... so who are the savages here. Who are inhuman here....When you have people who think that more people have to die before they can think to resolve the issue, isn't that Ben-Laden-like thinking (i.e., kill 3000 american civilians so that the gov. gets the message).....

This is all big B.S. and politics. The pwerful do what they want to do and will create whatever excuses they want.

Syria must be glad they left Lebanon now. Can you imagine if Israel was bombing Syrian mylitary installations in Lebanon? Maybe Hizbullah wouldn't have kidnapped those two soldiers if Syria was still around. Israel's goal now is clear: destroy hizbullah. What is hisbullah's goal? You don't start a war and count on international compassion to save you!

Has anyone seen Hizballah press secretary yesterday giving a tour to CNN? It was embarassing. "here is where they destroyed this, here is where they destroyed that..." Those guys just don't get it. Israel has green light from the globe to do what it wishes in the area. Pictures of destroyed homes and bloodied children will not do a thing. Ask the people of camp Jennin if there is still doubt.

In the meantime, more people will be displaced, more children orphaned, and more people pushed against their will to radical views.
