Around Casablanca!
12:00:00 AM Sunday Mar 30, 2003

This is the first in a Raioo series of Travel discussions dedictaed to exchange travel ideas. What must people see in a place, what they should avoid, all the cool hidden secrets that you know and you want to share with others.. either because you live there or you've been there. We start with Casablanca, Morocco, the largest city in the country.

Ohh! and we also found in our ancient vault, the diaries of an ancient Raioo friend Antr, we wonder if he ever made it to Casablanca... Morocco 5 & Khmiss

source: The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia Copyright ? 1999, Columbia University Press

Arab. Dar-al-Baida, city (1994 est. pop. 2,940,623), W Morocco, on the Atlantic Ocean. The largest city and principal port of Morocco, it accounts for more than half of Morocco's industrial production. The city's leading industries produce textiles, glass, electronics, bricks, beer, and soft drinks. Fish and seafood are abundant in the coastal waters. Major imports include petroleum products. Casablanca is the seat of numerous Arab and French schools, an art school, the Goethe-Institut, and the Hassan II mosque (1993), one of the world's largest.

Casablanca is on the site of Anfa, a prosperous town that the Portuguese destroyed in 1468; they resettled it briefly in 1515 under its present name. Almost destroyed by an earthquake in 1755, Casablanca was rebuilt (1757) by Muhammad XVI. It was occupied by the French in 1907. During World War II, Casablanca was the scene of one of the three major Allied landings in North Africa (Nov., 1942) and of a conference between Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill (Nov., 1943).

I don't think we can be able to say that Casablanca is a great modern city. I have been in many modern cities across Europe (London, Paris, Bruxelles, Francfort, Barcelona) and I can say that we are very far away from to have a modern city.city i think we can't say it's a great city just because there is twin towers where the half of floors are empty locations.another probleme about that city is the lack of transport, evacuation of dirty water and infrastructure in general , it's a dirty city and so i think Rabat is more appropriate to represent the country abroad.

as i like to say \"there is Casablanca and then Morocco\" i am sure that all Casawa are loudly proud of this great contemporary city...it is funny how all foreigners mistake it for the capital of Morocco, it should be ( no disrespect rabatti)

Meilleur pub ? Casa : le petit rocher.
Meilleures plages : Babaloo ? Tamaress, Daom? et bouznika pour les environs. L'id?al serait une plage o? les bus ny m?nent pas :)
Fast-food : est ce que qq'un conna?trait les brochettes du march? C.I.L, ?'est le best.
meilleurs caf?s : L'op?ra - Th?or?me.

? Casa, y'en a pour tous les budgets et toutes les classes sociales.

SHAWARMA at maarif is my favorite place at casa to eat shawarma not only that, but the place is so cozy to eat and relax, i forgot the name of it but i still remembered it's near by shoes stores. i love that shawarma with pickles and, it's just the best!!!! also, the best place to eat the babouch ( snails) is in derb ghallef, i used to go with elwalida to shop and eat bowls of babouch till my eyes get explosed, too bad that no one can bring it in the airplane,

i guess this topic will make everyone to go back home for delicious food !!!!

Adnane,

Livre service next to Cinema Liberte, is the oldest and biggest book store, in 3 floors if my memory hasnt decayed, I used to buy stuff from yamat noudou trogdou...now there are many more but not of the same size, one is in Bd M5, one block away from Cinema ABC.

As for the public librairies, we had one in the neighbohood, but the choice of books was very limited...I dont know about now.
I used to borrow books from the "Centre culturel francais".
But you have to be member, the fees are "formality" only...

Thats how updated my information

Antr, well that one is also good, they have nice shrimp croissant.. I think the restaurant I meant is down a little bit towards the port, probably called Dauphin ?

Anyone knows any good bookstores ? is there actually a Public Library where you can subscribe and borrow books to read, and return them within a deadline ? usually such libraries are common in USA. They're sponsored by the government, local companies and local people. Boston Public Library has a nice section that hosts Arabic books, mostly donated by people.

Nowadays slums do exist in every town in Morocco without exception, Rabat, Agadir, Marackech, Tanger...you name it!
Casablanca has more, because of the growing numbers of its population that is caused primarely by the immigration from other corners of Morocco.
And we know what causes immigration without going through details.
One should not forget that 70% do not live in cities.
And as long as nothing is done to keep them there where they are, poeple will keep floding in ...
As for the fashion stuff, the latests fashion that rings in any city starts from Casablanca and at lower price than elsewhere, because that where the textile factories are based and thats where the large markets of local and none local products can be brought in anyways.

Yes, there are plenty of good and reasonable price restaurats, you just cannt been looking hard enough.

-A Cheese burger costs the same as in any McDo around Morocco.

-As for the pollution, that is a true fact...Cann't argue with that.
You should have seen Athens during summer, it makes Casa look like a shiny cristal ball...

Casablanca is a didvided world boiling in the same pot. While you can pretend life is an A+ you may consider also the other sad side where slums are under the urban name "Casablanca"...Not to mention the smoke dust flowing out of buses vans...Casablanca is the city that get the whole stress and burden of Morocco's economy. Talking about places, there are actually many places that are eye catching. It only depends on your day mood and pocket cheese. I do still believe though that the coast line half around the city could have been a big A+ if the city worked to put an end to polution, day time delinqucies and many "junkies".

Some Trivia:
1- Where can you find the latest fashion with a good price?
2- What is the restaurant where you can eat good fish?
3- What is the bad corner you don't wanna be around after sun set?
4- How much a cheesebuger cost in Casablanca?
5- Where the 7 Roads" Sba3 Shwant" junction located at?

Peace!

If you judge Casablanca from Cafe' de France, then you havent much of it...

You cann't judge a 4 milion city by focusing on who is wearing
dirty socks or underwear, I am sure that in your home town there plenty of them, without counting those who wear none...
Assuming that some of them cann't be circulating in Casa as we speak :)
All large cities in the world, New York included, tend to
look dirty...and as a Moroccan immigrant in NY, you should know
by now, that not all poeple who live in NY are NewYorkers...
just like not all those who live in Casa are Bidawa...
Casablanca bellongs to me as it belongs to you or any other other Moroccan, avoir tribal thinking my friend, we are riding the 21 century...

Peace out.

Actually, Amine remember boulangerie in Rond-point Shell Mohammed V ? that's where I had the best petit-pain au chocolat and croissant in my life!!!! I don't know if they're still making it thaaat good in that little boulangerie.

Last time I was in casa, I was surprised by the amount of black DUST in buildings, trees and palm trees.. Casablanca architecture is one of a kind, a mix of art-deco from the 1930, moorish architecture and modern glass buildings.. if they could just fix up those art-deco white buildings!

Salam all,

This discussion is not really to promote Casablanca for tourism etc. It's for people to say what they feel about the city.

Casablanca is a very large place with a very diverse population. One neighbourhood or the other doesn't really represent the only face of Casablanca.

In my view, Casablanca is the home of the best boulongeries in the world. I am not sure what the reason for that is, but no matter how much they've tries in our little town of Oujda, bread and pastries just don't taste as good as they do in Casa, although this past Ramadan I had some pretty good pastry from the boulongeries of Oujda.

Casablanca doesn't have Karane stands, which are essential for oujdi people. A student cannot carry on in the splintering cold of January without a healthy doze of Karane with a sprinkle of salt, cumin, and hot pepper grinds.

I have not been to Hai Mohammadi, etc. So any attempt from my part to discuss the darker side of the city would be dis-honest and unfair.

negative or positive.. both could be usefull comments, just make sure you stick to the touristic aspect, to the nostalgic aspect (your memories of casa as a traveller, citizen, passer-by..), and avoid getting into the socio-political issues of the city. That's outside the scope of the discussion.

lot of people are mistaken about casablanca..to know more about it you should visit the popular places such as Hay mohammadi where "lbrarek_diour al kasdir" are every where and population is suffering the luck of water, sanitary facilitiues, fire burning their houses every day, etc.. but no body cares. It the richest city in the whole country, beside the taxes revenues are higher capared to any otrher cities..but what the government did to rescue these ppl, they fought against the colonialism, and participated rebuilding the city but what they got back !? humiliation, unemployement, and discrimination...Hchouma Bazzaf..

I am wondering what will happen if one day those responsible will be attacked or threatened by any foreign forces, will the poplutaion fight for them again..

bonjour :

?a reste notre cher pays qu'on aime tant.

amicalement

When we were in high school and were beginning to break free from family sponsored holidays, Tangier was the place (Touanej). Casablanca was an intimidating and scary place for many of us. We had to revise our French, check our clothes and polish our shoes to houf l'Casa. A few years have passed since we left high school and l'Maghrib. I went to Casa to check it out. I went to the same place where we used to have coffee: Cafe de France. Instead of finding people who would emulate me and my friends as well as my generation, Cafe de France was filled with young people who did not care about their appearance, akhlaaq. Clean clothes have disappeared as has the clean air. Polished shoes have gone and gave way to "mechchayate" on the terrace of Cafe de France just as have the polished manners of the "Baidaouis."
P.S. I chose Cafe de France as representative of Addar l'mouskha l'koubra!

Actually, there is a place in casa, right behind the King's palace in Derb sultan, Al Houbous. Quiet, beautiful, and clean. I use to go there as much as i can. And if you know the Ancient Medina of casa, get to Hay Mouha ou Saeed, there are some shops there for Msemen and harcha then sneak to Derb Gnawa, where you can find shops for the american brand names. Out of that place, you will face the Bazaars, huge stores full of antiques, and staff. There is the new Medina, stylish young pple :)) and tall buildings. I miss that city, a mysterious one, it swallows you in and never let you out. Casa in the nights is more exotic, sort of european cities, bars and night clubs. Anyway, It's a city where you can find anything you want, and Dima Dima Raja.

What happend to this website. Since it got updated or whatever. is getting worse. We've been told that raioo music has being deleted because it cost money to diffuse. I said it's ok. But i tried to today to look for the newspaper or media section that i use to broase through this raioo. I can not find it. We want our old raioo back.

I wouldn't recommend it in August..Not at all it's loaded and you can't enjoy to take a walk peacefully :) Beside that it is the best place on earth, and the best place to call home...

One thing about Casa I will always remember is the early morning mist.. it's humid, fresh and brisk. That moment in the early morning when the madding traffic hasn't kicked yet
